Francis lived a life of poverty and went around preaching to everybody, even the popes, about the life of Jesus Christ and how they should be behaving in the Church, so people began to follow him. He had 11 followers by 1209. "To follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and to walk in his footsteps" was the one rule he really cared about.

The franciscan order became an official order when Francis started getting more followers and decided to go to a pope to become an order. The first pope wasn't completely sure about them, but then the pope finally understood their vow for poverty.

The order of poor ladies or the second order has been told that it had began in 1212. The order was for women who believed in what St. Clare was saying and wanted to follow her rule. St. Francis helped them become the one of the first contemplative order of nuns in the Catholic Church.

The Brothers and Sisters of Penance or the third order or now known as Tertiaries, started in 1221. St. Francis thought of this order as an order that the people who couldn't join the first two, either because they were married or other reasons, but still wanted to follow St. Francis.

Kolbe and the community at Niepokalanów helped to hide, clothe and feed 3,000 Polish refugees, of which 2,000 were Jews.

When he was caught and taken to the concentration camp, branded prisoner #16670, the nazi was going to choose 10 people to starve to death, in an underground bunker, in punishment for three men escaping. A man was chosen, but he had begged for it not to be him because he had a family and kids that he wanted to go back to. When Kolbe had heard this he took the mans place instead. He lasted 2 weeks after being executed with a lethal injection because they wanted the cell to be empty.

We are learning about him today because he taught the church and everyone to no matter what, think about others before yourself and to be the best version of yourself even when you are surrounded by strangers. He devoted his whole life to Mary and no matter what he was going through he always thought that he should be or is helping someone else. He was selfless and that is why he is still being spoken about today. He sacrificed his life so that someone could go on and have a chance to live.

The reason why we still talk about St. Francis today is because he didn't care about what people thought about him, he just wanted to preach to people about God and Jesus's life. He preached to everyone and everything. He gave up everything so he could really understand what he was preaching and so he could really let God live through him. He is still being talked about today because he thought the whole church that it shouldn't be about money and how high in the monarchy you are, and that its just about letting God live through you and helping those in need.
