General George Washington had proposed a French-American attack against the British in Yorktown, VA. 17,000 French-American troops had surrounded the British stronghold. With the French help, the British soon became hopeless for victory. The British then surrendered on October 19, 1781. The victory of the colonists made them keep fighting for their country, victory was near for them. Later it would pave the way for American freedom, peace, and independence.

This surprise attach on German mercenaries hired by the British was the win the American needed to convince them they could win the war.
