Goals: The United States had moved the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor as a warning to Japan.  The Japanese responded by launching a sneak attack on the fleet in hopes of defeating the US quickly in the war.  This was a defensive battle for American forces, which fought back as best they could.

Goals: In an attempt to strengthen their defensive positioning for their empire in the South Pacific, Japanese forces decided to invade and occupy Port Moresby in Guinea and tulagi inn the southeastern solomon islands


Outcome:1 transport damaged, 92 aircraft destroyed. Goals: In planning the attack on Tarawa, Nimitz urged Spruance to attack Tarawa, occupy it and to withdraw again as quickly as possible, fearing a major Japanese naval retaliation against this, the first major US amphibious assault.
