Adult SEL and Secondary Post were my biggest takeaways from our Unit 1 Resources. When I think about SEL, I usually focus on the curriculums, lessons, and activities I’ll provide for my students. I have learned that supporting adults on campus with their own social and emotional well-being is crucial. I feel a responsibility to promote healthy SEL for both students and staff.

Secondary Traumatic Stress was another big takeaway. I’ve always known that students stresses can weigh heavily on teachers and counselors, but I didn’t realize it was known as Secondary Traumatic Stress or that resources were available to help manage it.

Self care is crucial to the helping profession to prevent burn-out. Burn out can have physical, and mental negative consequences. I was most shocked about the digestive disturbances that can be caused from burn out. If helping professionals were more aware of the consequences of burnout and that self care is the way to prevent it, more people will prioritize self-care.

To support good self-care, I need a consistent daily, weekly, and monthly schedule. As a school administrator, I'm constantly on the go, pulled in different directions, and handling unexpected issues. This often means my tasks with tight deadlines get pushed to the back burner, leaving my evenings and weekends full of work. To address this, I’ll create a schedule with time blocks during my workday to stay on top of my duties. I also need to implement a self-discipline tracker to hold myself accountable—not just a one day or week task completion but instead exercise, or meal prep a new way of life.

I love hanging out with my friends at our homecoming. During homecoming, I ensure I get all my work completed, I take off, I ensure I have the sitter. That is self care. I NEED to do this more often. As I always feel rejuvenated and happy while we are together.
