Book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Topic: Categorizing/Sorting

Activity: What foods did you notice that were healthy foods for the caterpillar? Why do you think the caterpillar was not feeling well on Saturday? Why did the caterpillar feel better on Sunday?

Materials Needed: Gather a bunch of plastic foods from your dramatic play area and discuss which ones students might think are healthy and unhealthy and why. Have them sort the food into 2 containers for healthy and unhealthy. I have also used the phrases "everyday food" and "sometimes foods."

Extension for home/family engagement: Have students talk about the food they are eating at dinner and see how they would categorize it. Talk about every day foods and sometimes foods.
