Oral Story For Story Telling Notes

The Oral story that I will be analyzing today is We're Going on a Bear Hunt preformed by Michael Rosen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gyI6ykDwds

The purpose of this piece is to tell a story of a family trudging through many different obstacles to find a big bear, The family face many different problems along the way such as a snow storm, A forest and a cave. This story is aimed at young children mainly, The way Micheal Rosen keep the young audience interested is by using many different sound affects to demonstrate the barriers that the family are facing, He also uses big hand gestures to help the story progress. Simply and silly will keep a child interested interested for the five and a half minutes running time; Another minor detail is that this piece is celebrating 25 years of Walker Books.

I know this because of Michael Rosen's mannerisms he is telling a simple story of a family that goes on journey through many obstacles to find the big bear they were looking for them only to run all the way back again scared after Michael Rosen had said they weren't as well as gesturing a child acting very confident and standing tall with good posture holding his bag straps.

Repetitiveness is a large theme making it easy for a child to follow, remembering all the noises and the simple rhymes that comes in between them.

This piece of video footage has been taken from a documentary called "Knuckle"which focuses on Traveler feuds, most noticeably the Joyce and Quinn family's; however this section purely focuses on Big Joe Joyce the head of the Joyce Family and self proclaimed king of all the travelers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvXojb-lCdQ

This story is inside view into the Joyce family one of Ireland's two biggest traveler family's, the purpose of this piece is to show the viewer the things traveler men will do to each other to hold the title of "King of the travelers" but these men aren't young men but they are in they're early 60's and have continued to fight since the early 1980's.

The narrator who also filmed some of the footage speaks about how from being aloud to enter there world he found himself being drawn into there way of life and even began to enjoy 2 older men one of which was Joe Joyce himself began seriously hurt one another, He begins to explain that the travelers live in a brain washed society and fight for the sake of fighting, also he explains how both family are now un-sure why they feud and it has boiled to a point where Joe's family and the Quinn's family hurt each other just for the sake of hurting each other. Another reason why the narrator is so against bare knuckle fighting is because of the childishness, Joe Jocye posts videos on the internet just to insult his opponents. The aim of this documentary is to highlight Irish travelers way of life.

The piece of documentary is not suitable for children because of the blood, violence and un-suitable language.

The origins of my name are very short and simple, It all began when I was still just a small organism inside of my mother; My father was a very big fan of the name Arthur and my mother was fan of the name Isaac, however they weren't fans off each others choices and this caused small squabbles between them, however one day over a Sunday roast at my great Grandmothers house they began to discus names and as was common practice they began to lightly bicker, but then my great Grandmother interpreted them with the suggested name of Joshua to which they both stopped arguing and both agreed that Joshua was a nice name.
Once I was born according to my mother she took one look at me and said I looked like a Joshua, Ultimately I can't understand how someone can look like a name but that is the origin of my name although I prefer the shorted version of Josh

Taken from: http://www.topmarks.co.uk/christmas/nativitystory.aspx
The story of The First Christmas is told from no particular characters point of view, it is told from a narrators points of view.
Characters:
Mary and Joseph- They are Jesus's parents who travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem to pay taxes to king Herod. Both characters are very ordinary; they aren't wealthy or connected to any other wealthy characters. Mary is heavily pregnant hence why she has to ride on a donkey to Bethlehem, Joseph is a hard working carpenter who takes the journey to Nazareth to pay of his taxes as he is from the house of David.
The Angel/Bright Star/3 Wise Men- Both The Angel and The Bright star are messengers of God; The Angel wears white robes and is a key character in the story as he informs Mary that she has been chosen to give birth to Gods child, The Bright Star has a small but significant roles in the story because it guides the 3 wise men to the barn in Bethlehem so that they are able to bare gifts to Jesus also they all have the same dream that night which warns the of King Herods plot and so they return to there own country and don't inform the king on Jesus's location. Therefore saving the son of Gods life. The 3 Kings are well dressed and rid camels they are intelligent and wealthy.
The Shepard's- The Shepard's don't contribute much to the story other than they worship the son of God after they locate him due to the Bright Star's help.
Jesus- Although the story revolves around him he doesn't have a major part in to play other than to be born and brig joy to those around him and ultimately the world, He is a small defenseless baby who rely's on the protection of most other characters. He is wrapped in clean cloth and is placed in a manger for most of the play other than when he finally travels to Egypt.
King Herod- we don't see King Herods however he plays a key role in this story as he is the main protagonist apart from his soldiers who aren't mentioned in this version. He lies to the 3 Wise men about wanting to meet Jesus, He is Hostile towards The Son of Gods and becomes paranoid that Jesus will take his throne and so he orders all baby boys be slaughtered in a attempts to find Jesus.

Thyme's: Biblical, A sense of coming together, Travel, Over coming a obstetrical, Celebration.
The story of the first Christmas fits into three of the 7C's category which are: Celebrate, connected and caring.

Information:
The census that was ordered by Caesar Augustus was the first of its kind. It was done because the Roman government wanted to make sure that everyone in the Empire was paying their taxes correctly. The census was carried out all over Empire (most of Europe): but in Palestine, it was carried out in a Jewish way rather than a Roman way. This meant that families had to register in the their historical tribal town rather than where they lived. This also meant that Joseph and the very pregnant Mary would have had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, as this was town that Joseph's family (the royal family of David) originally came from - a journey of about 70 miles (112 kilometres).

A Letter From Santa Claus

.The themes of the story are joy to all, explanation, instructions and keeping secrets.

.The story fits into 3 of 7 plot structures which are connected, creative and caring.

.The purpose of this story is simple, it is a response letter to a little girl named Susie who asks for a trunk full of little pieces of clothing for her dolly; however Santa explains how he won't be able to fit a very large trunk down the chimney in her bedroom. Also Santa talks about how he will have to come to deliver the trunk full of little clothes and he requests Susie distract her little brother George when he enters the house . Finally he asks her to sweep up all the snow that his boots leave in the house and if she does and carries on being a good girl he will bring her that present.

.In this letter written by Santa he does does not describe much about himself other than he has large snow covered boots, but neither does he describe Susie or her little brother George. My assumption is that Susie is between the ages of 5-7 and George is between 4-6.

.the letter creates rather a relaxed and secretive atmosphere. it has been created by Santa himself through the use of giving instructions to the young girl in order to receive a reward. This letter gives of a tip toe feeling because Santa gives Susie her instructions oh how to distract her little brother and if necessary blind fold him. The letter also warns the little girl that if George does certain things "he will die someday", the letter seems to take a slightly dark twist after this certain point.

.The target audience is parents and children, its a story that would be read to children before bed on the lead up to Christmas.

.Language in the piece is quite simple as to make it easier for children to understand.

.The plot
The story is a hand written letter from Santa, it's more of instructions to Susie on how she can earn her new dolly clothes. In this letter Santa also does do some story telling by describing how he climbed down her chimney the previous night on Christmas and saw her sleeping peacefully. In these letters of instructions he explains to Susie how she must blindfold her or he will die someday, How she must not light a fire in her living room so he may enter with her present, he instructs her to sweep up the snow left behind by his big large boots so no one but Susie knows he was there. Finally he apologies for not bringing her present on Christmas night but unfortunately he had to run out of stock, he gives his best wishes and then the letter finishes.

.the themes of this piece are simple there are only 3 in my opinion, creativeness, Family and togetherness.

.I believe that the story fits into 3 of the 7C's which are celebrate, connecting and creative.

.The purpose of the story is simple, the underline of it is to basically show the audience which i believe will be young children before bedtime leading up to Christmas that working as a team with there own sibling and family members helps you achieved good things therefore impressing Santa which leads to a full stocking on Christmas.

.There are many characters in this children's book at the garden center, outside playing out in the snow and the family members like mum, dad and the cat.
However the story centers around Topsy and Tim who are twins who end up going on a simple adventure to the garden center to find the new Christmas tree, but because they are children everything is over the top and is much more exciting from building a snow man to waving to other children. They are both described as cheery children who are always at each others side even when sleeping on Christmas night, One is male and the others is a female but not only are they brother and sister they also appear to be best friends.

.The book creates a loving, can do attitude and caring atmosphere it does so by presenting two loving siblings and attempts to try and build a bridge with the younger audience members by showing them something similar to there own
lives.

.The target audience are younger children as a bedtime story during the build up to Christmas, also parents trying to settle their children down for the night.

.In this story the language is as simplistic as can be, the reason for this being is make the story connectable for the younger audience as well as making it eaiser for them to understand it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oixw-C5h8zc

.The themes of the story are Giving, pointlessness and funny expectations

.Out of the 7C's there are 3 that stand out in this story which are Courageous, celebrate and caring.

.The story is centered around a young wife named Della who wants to but her husband a new watch strap because his old one is slowly breaking and it making himself conscious, so she decided to sell her hair to buy this watch strap for Jim's watch, once she sells her hair and buying the strap she presents Jim with his Christmas gift but before she can she must opens his gift to her only to find out it was a hair pin covered in stunning jewels and so she promises to re grow her hair, after this Jim opens his present only to find out its a watch strap, however what Della does't know is Jim had sold his watch to buy her the hair pin. they both laugh and enjoy there Christmas.

.The purpose of this story is to teach the audience to always give at Christmas and to always enjoy the day no matter what presents you receive, to always be greatful for what you do have and finally to love those around you.

.There are only 2 main characters with most of the story being centered on Della she is at first pictured and a beautiful young wife with brown eyes and glow ginger hair, jimmy is pictures as an average sized man with brown hair and beaten up old watch. Also there are 3 smaller characters such as the two little mice who I believe are the characters who reason with Jim and Della who also provide visual comedy and finally the little old hairdresser who pays Della for her hair, she is pictures as a small lady with weary eyes and a purple dress.

.The atmosphere created by this story is a giving and loving one. It has been created by the characters un-selfishness and willingness to give to there loved ones. it is almost lesson to the young audience to always make someone else's day better on Christmas.

.The language is simple is piece as it is a children's story, It keeps the dialect simple as to not complicate things and immerse the children into the story.

.The target audience i believe would be children as it is an animated story and is narrated as to give children as an audience that link to the characters as it is explained directly to them as well as at times having the characters speak themselves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81RBo5lTJp4

The Little White Butterfly 22/11/2016

The Little White Butterfly By Joshua Parker

Picture a bitterly cold Victorian winter, the air is thin with frost and if you look up at the night sky you can barely tell the stars from falling snow flakes, up in an old oak tree there are a small family of white Butterfly's all huddled together to keep warm and fall asleep in the hope that Santa will bring them lots of brightly coloured flowers to drink from. However whilst all the other butterfly's were sleeping in the old oak tree. Our friend the littlest white butterfly of them all thought he heard a knocking noise and so he flew as fast as he could to investigate the noise, but when he got outside the old oak tree he soon realised it was only old leafs falling from the old oak tree's branches and before he could even give a sigh Mummy White Butterfly called him back to the little huddle to sleep, So still full of Christmas cheer he began to crawl back inside the old oak, however he didn't get very far because before he could even shout “Coming Mummy White Butterfly” a large snowy gust of wind 10 times the size of the old oak tree picked up The Little White Butterfly and threw him around. The Little White Butterfly tried with all his might to fight the large snowy gust of wind but his little wings were no match for the frosty force of the wind and it chucked him this way and that way, up, down, left, right, forwards, backwards and all around in a tumble until he landed on a big pile of snow all in a tumble. The Little White Butterfly sat up and he could hear Mummy and Daddy Butterfly as well as all his bothers and sisters calling out for him. He began to shout back “I am over her” but the loud whistling noise of the storm drowned out there voices, He began to get in a huff and a puff “what's the use they can't see me in this snow storm, I'm completely white!” he murmured. All of a sudden out of the corner of his eye he noticed a little orange light far in the distance, So The Little White Butterfly picked himself up and brushed off all of the snow and started to march through the blistering cold snow storm and as he trudged on and on the little orange little became clearer and clearer “Oh tulips its a candle” he said. By now the candle easy to see and so he pressed his face apon the window expecting to see a happy family but all he saw were two very sad looking adults huddled around a little candle who looked like they were about to cry “Oh tulips, this isn't good I wish there were all cosy in the big old oak tree with me and my family” he said, but from out of no where a little bunch of squeaking noise drifted apon his ear, he began to look around and from the edge of his gaze he spotted a little snow covered mouse hole “Oh tulips a mouse hole” he said. Without a thought he dashed in the mouse hole and immediately the cold chill on his nose vanished, as he brushed off the snow flakes he could hear laughter and squeaks coming from further down the mouse hole and so The Little White butterfly crept slowly to appeared to be a door and knocked ever so politely. All off a sudden the door swung open and there was a little friendly mouse stood in front of him “Hello son, would like some mince pie?” said Mr Door Mouse “Oh tulips yes please” said The Little White Butterfly and so he sat at the door mouses table and enjoyed mince pie and milk, whilst wiping his face with a napkin Mrs Door curiously asked The Little White Butterfly “how did you end outside our door then?” to which The Little White Butterfly began to tell the story of how the big snowy snow storm has swept him away from the big old oak tree, he explain how he was thrown into a big pile of snow and how he trudged towards a bright orange light through the storm and ended up at the humans window, to which one of the little mouses interpreted “oh yes they are the Copperfield family, they never have much for Christmas”. The Little White Butterfly thought to himself “Oh tulips if only there was something I could do to help” but before he could do much thing he was fast asleep on the Door Mouse's table.

There was a lot of laughter and joyous cheers, “its Christmas shouted Door Mouse Children” “Ah yes merry to you children and to you Little White Butterfly as well” he replied “Oh tulips, I fell asleep on your kitchen table” said The Little White Butterfly, “I must get back to the old oak tree to see my family” and in a rush he thanked The Door Mouse family to which Mrs Door Mouse invited him back any time and with this he hurried out of the mouse hole and instantly fell face first into a huge pile of yellow snow “Oh tulips, yellow snow! That must be the butchers dog he is always weeing on the old oak tree” but as he looked up he noticed and old big Victorian five pound note and then he thought “this five pound note is no use to me a Little White Butterfly” and with this he did not brush of the yellow snow and quickly stuck the five pound note on his back using the yellow snow as glue he stuck the five pound note to his back and flew as quickly as possible through the Copperfields letter box and straight up to the parents room where he dropped off the five pound note on there bed and quickly left through the letter box again, but as he left through the letter box he heard a huge cheer come from the Copperfields house, immediately he began to smile because he knew he'd made a family happy on Christmas and with this he flew back to the old oak tree to find Santa had left him lots of his favourite flowers and huge bundle of tulips. However the story does not end there because that very same evening he took a tulip to Mrs Door who was very pleased with her gift and before he flew back to the old oak tree he peaked the Copperfields window to see them all gathered round belly's full, big smiles on there faces and lots of presents for them all and that was The Little White Butterfly's most memorable christmas.
