Clinical Experience

From 2016 to 2022 I worked for a non-profit foster care agency; first starting out as a case manager and then moving into a clinical position in 2019 and eventually was a clinical supervisor until I left the agency in 2022. During my doctorate program, I took a course in clinical supervision and have also taken a clinical supervision certification course through PESI for the counseling profession in 2020.

In 2021, while still at the foster care agency, I joined a private practice group and began building a client base within that practice. I fully joined the practice in 2022 and have been providing therapy to children, youth and adults with specialization in trauma work.

Teaching Experience

During my time as a clinician and clinical supervisor working in a non-profit setting, I had several counseling interns that I provided support for in their clinical skill building, education and development of their professional identities.

I have been teaching with The Chicago School since 2023. I have taught Lifespan Development, Counseling Theories, Introduction to the Counseling Profession and Ethics, Multicultural Counseling and Career Counseling. While in my Ph.D program I co-taught CMHC fieldwork courses, supervision courses, Principles of Counseling and residency courses.

My general approach to supervision, clinical work, and academic leadership is one that respects a reflective model. I believe that reflection in all areas promotes restoration and relationship building, and increases self-reflection and engagement in the learning process. I believe students can become more attuned to themselves and their education and demonstrate a deeper self-awareness when using reflection in the classroom. As with many new experiences, the counseling program generates a significant amount of trainee anxiety for students as they learn to be clinicians, professors or supervisors. Therefore, the education and being provided to these students requires more emphasis on learner centered teaching and reflection, where they can develop their communication, knowledge, self-awareness and network with other learners in such a way that facilitates in depth learning experiences.

Supervision Philosophy

My general approach to supervision is one that respects a reflective model. I believe that reflective supervision promotes restoration and relationship building, and increases self-reflection and engagement in a variety of clinical issues including cultural competence and diversity. Therefore, counselors and counseling trainees can become more attuned to their client and demonstrate a deeper self-awareness through reflection.

As with many new experiences, the counseling process generates a significant amount of trainee anxiety for novice counselors. For this reason, it is my belief that supervision for novice counselors requires more structure and direct instruction than when provided to experienced counselors. My supervision style is based on the reflective supervision model; the supervision process involves a willingness to engage in and explore individual vulnerabilities and promotes reflective practice in stepping back and examining complex situations with clients thus leading to thoughtful, informed decisions.

Dissertation: Practitioners Experiences Using Reflective Practices After a Client Suicide: A Qualitative Study

While I have not had a client die by suicide, I believe that if you are in the field long enough it is not a matter of "if" but "when". This thought is what drove me to explore how clinicians experienced client suicide, what postventions were available to them and where we still need to grow and learn as a profession in supporting ourselves, our colleagues and our supervisees when a client dies by suicide.
