Standard K.10. Recall the student’s and/or school’s street address, city/town, and state.

This lesson could be taught by writing letters to a teacher or parent. These letters could be prompted and helped along, as they are not the focus of the lesson. A song could easily be implemented to help the students remember their addresses.

This standard is important for Kindergarten students to learn in case they get lost or wander away from family. It is also helpful to go ahead and instill this skill in them because everyone needs to know their address to go through life.

To introduce this standard, students must first understand their names and the concept of places. A lesson on towns and states may be necessary.

There may be students who already know their address because their parents have worked with them on it. Most probably won’t know what an address is yet. To check on who knows what, a quick round of informal assessment by questioning could be used.

SSP.06 would be most appropriate to teach this. It says, “Develop geographic awareness by….Understanding relationships between people, places, and resources.”

1. What is the standard?

a. K.09: Explain what a map and globe represent

2. How could I teach this standard to Kindergarteners?

a. You could take one of the giant map rugs and a globe to explain the lesson. Once the lesson is taught, you can have each student spin the globe and place their finger on an area. Then, they have to find it on the rug and tell the class it is a country, ocean, state, etc.

3. Why is this standard important for Kindergarteners to learn?

a. This standard is important for kindergarteners to learn because they will see maps and globes all throughout their life. Whether they go on vacation and need a map of the city, or even if they are just watching the weather report, they will see a map or a globe-like figure.

4. What (if any) background knowledge will I need to build in order to introduce this standard?

a. Some background knowledge that I would need to build on in order to introduce this standard are states, countries, bodies of water (oceans, rivers, lakes, etc.), and direction (north, south, east, and west).

5. How might student background knowledge of this standard vary? How can I check to see what their background knowledge on this standard might be?

a. Student background knowledge may vary due to who their parents teach them at home. In order to check what my students may already know about this standard, I could use a KWL chart to see what they know, what to know, and what they learned throughout the lesson.

6. Which standard(s) for social studies practice could be used to teach this?

a. SSP.01 Gather information from a variety of sources, including

        i. Printed materials

       ii. Graphic representations

      iii. Artifacts

      iv. Media and technology sources

b. SSP.06 Develop geographic awareness by:

        i. Identifying geographic symbols on maps and globes

ii. Understanding relationships between people, places, and resources

1. What is the standard? My standard is K.03, distinguishing between wants and needs.

2. How could I teach this standard to Kindergarteners? First explain the difference between want and a need. Find a book or story that follows with the students interest and go over the book to decide if it is a want or need. For example, the book Charlie and Lola, I Really Absolutely Must Have Glasses.

3. Why is this standard important for Kindergarteners to learn? This standard may be important for students when social studies starts to become more complex. For example, when students began to talk about the Great Depression and people did not have a lot of money and they had to decide if they actually needed something or just wanted it.

4. What (if any) background knowledge will I need to build in order to introduce this standard? I do not think background knowledge is necessary for this standard. The main thing that students need to know is the difference between want and a need.

5. How might student background knowledge of this standard vary? How can I check to see what their background on this standard might be? For a set/motivator, have students come up with a list of things they need and a list of what they want. Go over the list and correct them when needed.

6. Which standard(s) for social studies practice could be used to teach this? One of the practices that could be used with this standard is SSP.03, organizing data from a variety of sources in order to frame appropriate questions for further investigation. Another practice is practice SSP.04, communicating ideas supported by evidence to demonstrate and understanding of ideas.

Compare and contrast family traditions and customs, including: food, clothing, homes, and games.

I could teach these standards to my kindergartners by reading two pieces of literature that protains in today's world that consists of today's family traditions and customs, and what it use to be like. I would also teach this by having students critical think and work with a partner regarding what the differences and similarities are between the family traditions back then, and what it use to be like now.

This standard is important for several different reasons. However, one of the most important things is that students can get a clear picture as to how family traditions and customs use to portray in history.

I would need to study more in depth information regarding this standard in a way to help my students have a clear vision and a better understanding of the concept.

I would use this as a way to see exactly where my students are. In this case, as I am reviewing this with my students, if any issues regarding help with this concept, while students are working on individual work, I would call students to help them further in depth.

I would use standard 15. Which is, describing roles of authority figures in the home, school, and community, including: caregivers, teachers, school principals, police officers, and fire/rescue workers. I would use this knowledge to help my students have a better understanding on the conceptions of the standard.

1. What is the standard? K.18 Identify days of the week and months of the year.

2. How could I teach this standard to Kindergarteners? The days of the week song is what I know many teachers have utilized in the classroom. It could also be helpful to cut up flashcards of days of the week. This way, you can have students line the days of the week in order. In order to teach the months, I would ask students what month their birthday is in. Most likely, students are aware of their birth month if they can recall any this young. Hopefully, there would be a few months on the board between all the birth months. Calendar time is essential at this time, so we can also utilize that time to talk about which month is next, or came before the present month.

3. Why is this standard important for Kindergarteners to learn? Being aware of the days and months that pass is essential to the child’s knowledge of time. Students will recall days and months for the rest of their lives, and learning young sets that foundation for later knowledge to build on.

4. What (if any) background knowledge will I need to build in order to introduce this standard? The students should understand chronological terms and phrases, such as “yesterday” or “year”. It would also be helpful if students knew the month they were currently in, even if they can recall just that month and do not remember the other months, it is something for teachers to build on.

5. How might student background knowledge of this standard vary? Students may recall their birthday by month and day, while others may know that Christmas is on the 25th day of a month. Other students may just be aware that December is one of the months it has the possibility of snowing. Then, there is the possibility of students not knowing any days of the week or months of a year.

6. Which standard(s) for social studies practice could be used to teach this? K.17 says Use correct words or phrases related to chronology and time, including: Now, Long Ago, Before, After, Morning, Afternoon, Night, Today, Tomorrow, Yesterday, Last, Next, Week, Month, Year. K.19 says Locate and describe events on a calendar, including: birthdays, holidays, cultural events, and school events.

1. K.06 Recognize and describe different types of jobs, including work done in the home, school, and community

2. I could teach this standard by reading a book about different jobs then allowing students to play dress up of doctors, nurses, teachers, mom/dad, or restaurant workers. I could also give students class jobs to complete. We might could take a field trip somewhere to see how different jobs make up a community to keep it safe such as a fire station or police department.

3. This standard is important, so students can start to imagine what they want to be when they grow up.

4. Students should have some knowledge of basic jobs, but they may not understand what tasks are included in each job.

5. The background knowledge might vary depending on SES or what jobs they are seeing their parents or guardians going to or talking about. I can check this by asking students what they want to be when they grow up or by asking them what jobs they see their family doing whether it’s around the house or in the community.

6. SSP.06 Develop geographic awareness by: Understanding relationships between people places, and resources.

(Think hands-on, interactive- NO WORKSHEETS) I could have a posted picture of the rules in classroom, and we could all go around and do each rules. When its quiet time, I could clap three times. We could do this by letting the kids get with each other and talk then try it out.
3. Why do you think this is an important standard for kinders to learn? Students, no matter what age need to know the importance of rules and laws in a classroom. Even outside the classroom. It is important because with rules, the kids will go crazy and you as a teacher will not be able to keep a handle on the kids.
4. What background knowledge will I need to build for students to learn this standard? Explain to them that without rules, we get out of control, and it could lead to kids getting in trouble. Give them an example, get to kids who can participate with the activity and let them run wild with no rules. So, the other students, that by doing that it can lead to someone getting really hurt, and it is a bunch of chaos.
5. How might the background knowledge of students vary prior to instruction? Some kids may come from a home where they have rules there, so they know that rules are important, whereas another kid could from a family who says rules are unnecessary, with that it might be a little difficult. How can I check to see what their background on this standard might be? Ask them their ideas on rules and laws and see what they give you, before you give them background information.
6. How could I teach this standard to Kindergarteners?

First you would have to make sure the students understand what a role is. You can start off by making a connection to something they enjoy, kindergartners typically watch movies about superheroes so by asking them “What are the jobs of Violet in the Incredibles? ”. She is a superhero but she's also a daughter, and a sister. From that example they start thinking about what “jobs” or roles people play. That's where you go into the jobs of all the “grown-ups” in their lives (teachers, police officers, store owners).

3.
