Often parents don't help much their children. Only if they are technicians, electricians and so on, they are happy to encourage their children in choosing the same activities and try to improve their firm, with more modern technology.
I often Inform them of activities they can do together with their children, of the events where they can participate together and activities they can put in practice at home or even at school. When they saw what is possible to generate, they become other persons and collaborate more with teachers, school projects etc.

I work with children from 3 to 5 years old. Most of the meetings with the parents are related to their kid development and most of them are interested on what they can do so their kids can indirectly work at home. We suggest them to work with music, make crafts, involve them in common daily activities and motivate them to investigate about different topics, from dinosours to mixing colours. Luckily most of the parents are incredibly involve and sometimes they come to class and do their experiments with their child's classmates

I work at a school where there is a lot of neglect and lack of involvement/interest at home. The majority of parents do not even satisfy the basic needs of their children so most of them surely do not encourage children in any way regarding careers/school. When I tried to organise parents' conferences/ activities only 1 parent showed up from a whole class. Therefore I will do my best to promote these values & careers myself in the classroom with my students. Even though as mentioned in this topic parents are an important pillar in the children's career choice.

I think parents can positively influence their children's academic choices if they provide them with adequate support. Parents' level of education also increases propensity for science and, as far as fathers are concerned, mothers who are able to perceive greater value in the importance of STEM's subjects. The boys, if adequately supported, can achieve great success even in the fields that objectively seem to be more difficult. Sometimes it seems that the choices of our children are just unattainable dreams, but as demonstrated, they can be successfully realized if instead of directing them to something simpler, safer and easier to reach, they are supported and motivated. Every parent wants the good and the best of their children and at the same time the boys behave in such a way as not to disappoint the expectations of their parents. If both are able to find a meeting point, through communication and comparison, nothing becomes unattainable, the kids can become in the fields where they feel more worn and the parents will only be able to find great satisfaction from seeing their happy and accomplished children.

Unfortunately, the stereotype of a genius, introvert, no-social life and poor scientific is still in the minds of parents (and even some teachers) and scientists or STEM-related professionals sometimes don't help in breaking it. Even when STEM careers are interesting and with great possibilities I believe that STEM-skills are the most important thing to learn by parents, teachers and kids, because they will help them in anything they will pursue. And when possible that is the thing that I try to focus on... the way of thinking, the look for evidence-based answers and asking the right questions.

So many parents are interested in the economic perspectives of a job, their economic conditions often stop their children to pursue a stem degree. There is also a gender problem, a lot of girls ( and boys too ! ) attain a low level certificate and are not interested in stem career, due to persistent cultural stereotypes ( wife, mother and caregiven ) about the role of woman in the society that are very difficult to eradicate. So, I think, is very important inform the parents about stem careers and try to change their mindset about the role of woman and, at the same time, encourage these girls to attain a higher level of instruction. This is not only a responsability of the school but of the others political and social institutions too.

In my opinion, it depends on the parents. Some of them tend to think that STEM careers are very difficult for their boys or girls. However, others ones are interested in encouraging their children toward STEM careers. Also, there are some parents who do not want to be advised; they have their own option for their children instead of listening to the opinion of them. Maybe, we should show parents the real interests of their children.

In my country, parents work really hard and I am sure they will say “oh I have no time for this”. In my 3rd, 4th and kindergarten class, when I say to children “oooh you can try it at home, you know what to do” they always say “but my mom does not let me” but “my dad doesn’t buy me …. (You can fill this blank with the things are not expensive like cardboard, straw, a piece of rope, plastic table or a cloth hanger). Like Neil DeGrasse Tyson mentioned; adults are problem. We need to work as school environment for changing their attitudes. It can start with one or two class’s parents but we should change all school also other teachers. Because school is an ecosystem, it has too many components like students, teachers and parents. First we should motivate our all teachers to think scientific liberal arts, arts, science, math, even English, Turkish and German teachers.

At least in Catalonia, where I live, there is the growth of a new educational trend among parents, of "laissez faire", of letting children being the ones who choose, do what they like most, what make them happy ... they do not like their kids to come home with many homework, they want children to have time to play, to have fun, to be children. From my point of view, I think children have the right to have fun, of course, but also to learn habits of study and effort. I believe that the society of comfort guides parents to act in one way or another respect to their children, and if the laissez faire's culture drive parents to valorate a most relaxed study metodology, we should approach the science to their children in a ludic way, otherwise if the parents don't see that the kids are enjoying, they won't foster science studies to their sons and daughters.

Sadly, most of the times they give up with the education of their children when these are failing in some subjects. In this village, children spend many hours playing in the streets and they dedicate little time to study, so the results are not good enough.
I would like to raise awareness about the importance of study, about the future, the careers that will be more demanded as well as more rewarding. The school can organize lectures for parents, but some of them will not assist… nevertheless, as teachers our duty is to inform and try to improve the situation.

I always tell them that of course, there are people who find it easier, but most of the times the problem is not that they are not good at them, but that they study by memory and they don't understand what they are doing. So, they must help their children to concentrate in learning the process to study STEM subjects, which includes a lot of work of redoing exercises until they understand what has to be done and why. Once they change the way of learning, they become not so difficult and from that moment, their attitude is more positive.

Not all parents encourage their children to a specific job career. Some do not do it because they do not have the proper preparation, others because they think it is within the freedom of the child to choose independently. In any case, the parents' cultural background plays a fundamental role. Certainly, parents who have made scientific studies in their field are more informed and will tend to encourage their children to follow this path. However, in recent times in Italy is spreading the idea that studying at university does not pay for the efforts made because it becomes increasingly difficult to find a well-paid job in the field where you have studied. This is especially true in the field of scientific research: few are able to become researchers in Italy because the resources are scarce. So parents who know these things encourage their children to play a scientific career abroad. However, I believe that to guide their children to a scientific career is essential to stimulate curiosity from small to children, for example by offering fun games and playful experiments that explain the scientific reason.

We recently held an open day at our school where prspective students and their parents could visit and see what the school had to offer. We put on various demonstrations of experiments for students and parents to take part in including fingerprinting, how nettles sting you and dissections of hearts and kidneys. I had one set of parents that were more involved than their son and complained that their son wasn't interested in science but they were especially the father. my advice to him was to get involved in activities at home with his son. Hearts and kidneys can be bought from the supermarket and kitchen utensils can be used to explore their structure. Nettles can be plucked from roadsides and gardens for free. Fingerprinting can be done with an inkpad or latent prints can be lifted with some sellotape and some charcoal powder or chalk. The father was really enthusiastic at this advice, it had not occurred to him that his interest in science could influence his son's interest by getting involved together. There are plenty of online or local library resources available

On the other hand, some parents involved in STEM career themselves put pressure to their children to follow the same path, even when they are clearly not at all interested in the área. I think in general parents do not take the time to share thoughts on profesional guidance with their children and many times they are surprised to find out what children are attracted to. From my point of view, parents should get much more involved in the counselling field and be ready to always listen to their children's ideas, opinions and enquiries.

My opinion is it is in families where children were strongly encouraged to go to college.

The parents needs to know that based on the statistical analysis it appears that those who have graduated from STEM degrees have higher chances of employment that those who have gotten their higher education degree in other fields. Because on the basis of statistical data and general opinion on STEM degrees in Portugal, one concludes that STEM courses are mentioned in a positive way in relation to the labour market since they have long been put in relation to a good employment outlook and a high salary.

Everyone knows that numbers are better transmitted more often than words. We must make them reach the parents.

In some cases financial constraints in a household can be an impediment for parents to expose their children to science opportunities, as well as in following their children with the appropriate helps at home for homeworks for example. In this cases, I think that school should do more for them, in orde to give them the same opportunities.

Jose Molto, SpainUsually, most of parents are willing to encourage their children to study STEM careers - it doen´t matter if the student is male or female- One reason for that is because STEM careers are generally related to well paided jobs and respected job careers. But, for those parents who are not convinced to let children to study STEM careers, schools could prepare kind of "open days in STEM fields" to parents for giving them better knowlege about what kind of professions kids have ahead of them if they choose one of this options.

I will organise a parents meeting in order to make them aware that parental encouragement is a decisive factor for a student to pursue higher education and choose major in a STEM field. I will start the meeting telling them an experiment carried out years ago. A group of people came to a school telling the teachers that they can test their students in order to tell them which students will fail and which ones will succed. Despite this is imposible, they make them belive this and carried some tests. They save the reasults to see them at the end but they told the teachers that a group of random students did great in the test so those will be the one who will suceed, while another random group was going to fail in their live. Of course, they told them this as the results of the test. But between the group of the best students there were some of them who really struggle. The teachers believe this and unconsciously, they encourage the "outstanding" pupil and "ignore" the "failers. As a result of the experiment they could see that the expectations that any adult has on a kid are so important as it will determine his or her suceed, no matter which C.I. that pupil has.
With this I want to make them aware that is soo important their actitude.

In one of my primary school classes, consisting of 22 children, only parents of 5 students think and hope their children will go to college ... So it's very difficult to convince their parents to do something about it. I can confirm that my passion for STEMs is generally born in the family. At 11, I helped my father in his laboratory for assembling electronic components. At first for car radio, then for computers and finally for televisions, but when I asked to study in a scientific faculty in Rome, my father prevented me because a girl could not go to a town to live alone, so I had to attend the only University faculty in my city.
