This crushed the Cuban economy. The Soviet Union responded by purchasing Cuban sugar at inflated prices in order to prop up the Cuban economy. This ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in late 1991.  

~ Since 1994, a new policy has been put in place which allows 20,000 Cubans a year to immigrate to the US. A lottery is held for those interested in immigrating. In 2017 the wet foot/dry foot policy was ended and Cuban immigrants now receive the same treatment as all other people wishing to enter the United States.

That all changed in 1959 when the communist leader Fidel Castro led a violent rebellion that won control of the country. Throughout the mid-twentieth century the Cuban government had become corrupt.
