Union general-George B. McClellan was a major general that commanded the Union army he was involved in the battle of Antimen. Lincoln favored McClellan's ways but did not like some others. A lot of soldiers that were under his command favored and praised him.

The battle of Antietam

Antietam occurred on September 17, 1862 this battle was inevitable because both the Union and the Confederacy needed a victory for a bigger cause. The Confederacy needed victories on Union soil to prove their strength and push on to invade and control the capital. The Union needed this victory for major campaigns, one campaign that President Lincoln proposed was the Emancipation Proclamation. This would free all of the slaves, but this could not be done without a major Union victory. Antietam was America's most bloody one day battle in American history. In the end it was decided that it was a Union victory because of strategy. Both sides had tremendous amounts of death. Sadly Lincoln replaced General McClellan on November 7 and appointed Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside to be his replacement.

Maryland was a slave state but never seceded from the Union, even though Maryland had slaves they made a contribution to the Union army. At least 80,000 troops were sent from Maryland to assist the Union army. One other thing that made Maryland special was that they were a border state, this helped a lot because there were many points for defence.
