The Love Canal (1978)

The Love Canal in Niagara Falls, NY was originally intended to be a power canal that would generate hydroelectric power intended for an industrial city.

The production of the canal was never completed, so it was used as a place to dump 21,000 tons of toxic chemicals.

Since then NYSDEC implemented a system to gather contaminated liquids from the Love Canal landfill.

Three Mile Island was a nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Due to a cooling system failure, the power plant overheated resulting in the release of radioactive gas into the environment.

World Conservation Strategy (1980)

The World Conservation Strategy was a report that helped shape sustainable development globally.

The strategy consists of three main objectives:

Conservation of biodiversity (protecting ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity)
Sustainable use of natural resources
Equitable sharing of benefits (fairness in how we use and benefit from resources. Local communities are involved in conservation efforts.)
