Andy Evans is a symbol of blockage/problem towards Melinda. He is the antagonist to Melinda as well. A statement from the book shows he makes her feel upset, " Little flecks of metal slice through my veins. IT whispers to me. Fresh meat." That's what IT whispers." Pg. 86

Pg. 34 The nail polish symbolizes how Melinda is a permanent stain in their relationship. It also foreshadowed that Heather won't be friends with Melinda no more. A quote on that page shows how she is upset " Why is it so hard to make friends out here."

Pg. 118 Picasso is a famous artist that made artwork from random things, just like Mr. Freeman does. Melinda finds this artist very interesting and shows how he is a symbol on her creativity. A line from Speak "I get it! I get it!. Cubism. Seeing to the side of the face." This shows how eager Melinda is to focus on her life in art.

David is a symbol of belief and this is because when his teacher Mr. Neck was was being very racist, David stood up for what he believed in even though the teacher yelled at him to sit down or to go to the office David stood his ground quietly and walked out. "You opened a debate. You cant just close it just because it is not going your way.... David stares at Mr Neck, looks at the flag, then picks up his books and walks out the door."

After Thanksgiving Melinda brings the bones from the turkey to art class and created a sculpture and the sculpture is a symbol of pain. On page 65 Mr. Freeman says "This has a meaning. Pain" which shows that Melinda was expressing how she felt (all the pain inside) through the sculpture.
