It's a turning point in the story because she begins to dig into everyone else she has been meeting because she is so scared of Lillian. She isn't sure that Lillian and Rebekah are the same person, but she is sure that she can't have 100% trust in Rebekah.

This is the moment Esme realizes these threats aren't empty. She starts to realize Lillian isn't scared to do real harm to the counselors, especially considering this is right after they find the first dead deer. They know Lillian knows how to kill.

As the final line of the book, this quote builds suspense, but not suspense the reader will get a finite answer about. We have to assume what ended up happening to Esme. It shows what Lillian's plan was all along, which was to get one of the CIT's framed for what they did to her as a child.
