I also speak basic french and Italian, and I’ve started to count and say phrases in different languages, which has inspired the rest of the team to introduce their culture. The children can also choose what language I count in or what songs in different languages I use for transitions. This has also invited the children to talk about their cultures and languages - I have learned a lot more from them than I ever did at school!

End of term one we had family picnic with each group to help families get to know each other.

We have many diverse families, many different languages at our service, we have put up hello and welcome signs in many different languages to the entrance to our room with the flags to represent the words.

We have staff that speak Arabic, which supports the families whose first language is Arabic. They are able to communicate important information about the children, the service, incursions, etc.

Tarneit Central Kindergarten welcome signs displayed in diverse languages of the community at the entrance, a mini herb garden at the entrance of the building, being a bilingual service multiple staff converse with families in Punjabi (dominant language of the community)

The kindergarten where I work embraces significant diversity, with typical traditional foods like noodles and rice, which are best served hot. We actively offer to warm up food for the children upon families' consent to promote their appetite, supporting their learning throughout the day.

Inclusion for us looks at celebrating what a child can do rather than what they cannot do.

Inclusion encourages us to modify our environment to support participation while supporting the needs of each child.

Outdoor our main entrance we have a plaque acknowledging Aboriginal & Torres strait islander peoples as the Traditional owners of our land. We have some potted plants to help the area feel welcoming. As you enter our service we have another area where Aboriginal, Torress Strait Islander & Australian flags are displayed.

Also, asking families how they recognise and celebrate within their own culture and if they can help us celebrate these occasions in our own kinder.
