He has no ability to predict what she might do, or what she holds; her capabilities and emotions.
Lisa, however, with her 'feminine intuition' is able to draw out what the handbag and the jewellery means. This scene, really, is what solves the case in her mind, then the audience's, and then Jeff's, because we trust Lisa with her proper, more formal English, her clothes, the brighter lighting used around her, and the lengths she goes to for Jeff.
