The roots of the angsana tree have buttress roots, which help to support the tree, and prevent from toppling under wind. This is needed as trees in the emergent layer can grow up to 50 metres, so the additional support is much needed.
The angsana tree also has wide, shallow roots. In the tropical rainforest, there is ample rainfall, so there is no need for tree roots to grow deep to reach groundwater, as they can get it from the surface. The roots are very wide and spreading, which helps to increase the surface area from which the angsana is supported, thereby increasing its stability, better helping it to keep upright and to stay firmly rooted to the ground.

The angsana has buttress roots which are large and wide. Normally, they are found in nutrient-poor tropical forest soils that may not be very deep. They prevent the tree from falling over while also gathering more nutrients and can allow the tree to maximise its rate of water absorption.
