Topic: Cinderella as the passive heroine

In most versions of the story. Cinderella plays a very passive role when being abused by her stepmother and sisters. She does what ever they tell her to do and never show any traits of revolt or grievance. She did not ask for help even to her father. Even her salvation does not seem to be more related to her effort than to the help of magic. "The Mirror Broken: Women’s Autobiography and Fairy Tales" by Elizabeth Wanning Harries talks about the popular, questionable situation of the heroines of classic fairy tales being passive and sometime paralyzed.

Topic: Missing of the Father

Most versions of Cinderella did not spend much narration shaping the character of the father. The father marries the wrong women and become indifferent when Cinderella is being abused. Only in Cap O'Rushes the story ends in the resolution between the father and Cinderella. Other versions like Red Fish only mentions the father and the beginning, then focuses and ends with the interaction between the stepmother's side and Cinderella. Warner mentioned a little bit about how the character of father is almost transparent in these stories and how these tellers only focus and wish to focus on the development of the ladies. How the witch like character interact with the protagonist.

Controversial part: Topic of Cinderella being passive.

Someone question about my claim of how Cinderella is ridiculously passive and somehow too naive to survive in a world without magic. The objection might say that she is merely a victim of her stepmother's evil torment. If she revolts the situation just become worse for her. I have to say that it is actually possible. Because her stepmother is the one actually in control of the situation. However, I still consider not asking help from her father is a way of being passive. They live under the same roof, her father can see the load of work that the stepmother forces Cinderella do and he may have the intuition of the competition between the stepmother and the original daughter. Also, someone may say Cinderella is actually the one in control because she chose the most wise and bloodless way of manipulating the prince to escape from the tormenting life living with her stepmother. This is also questionable.

Topic: Source of magic

Most versions of Cinderella contain the plot where Cinderella receives help from different sources of magic. It can be her godmother, a tree near her mother's grave, or a fish etc.. However, most of the sources can be tracked back to their relationship with Cinderella's dead mother. This situation shows one crucial argument of the story Cinderella "do not abuse the orphan." As Warner adds, the dead parent will become a source of magic the lingering in the world to help their children when they were abused.

In most versions, besides the one written in the stepmother's view, the stepmother is the absolute enemy that has done hideous torment on poor Cinderella. Warner also mentions how this is common because of the popularity of reorganized families and the time and most story tellers' intention of creating a witch like character.

I am not quite sure about this, but maybe I can simplify the argument of my essay to discussing whether or not Cinderella is really too passive. The context will be that it is controversial that whether Cinderella is too passive considering different plots different versions of the story. And a tale can have various interpretation done by different people. Concept will be that Cinderella is too passive that she cannot survive in a world without magic.

This argument may not be strong enough.
