Because of the law that the government had passed he didnt think that the flag was worth anything and didnt care about the flag. When grand-da was younger the flag meant that the country was free and you could say whatever you wanted and now because of the S.O.S. law the flag didnt have any meaning.

As we all know, the american flag stands for the freedom of our country, and also for the brave souls who fought for it. It is used as a symbol in this story, as obviously as possible, to show the freedom this place once had. Did you notice that the term SOS stands for both "Shoot on sight" (as used in the story) but also for "Save Our Souls." This was a term shown in braille by ships and army troops to communicate a call for help. As Gran-da felt, he thought that the SOS act had undermined the country's freedom and tried to regain by creating a call for help to the public. The flag also stood as something useless for Gran-da had tried to burn it, emphasizing it's meaning and getting across his point. He tried to show people that there was a just way to deal with bad people, but in turn sacrificed himself for his beliefs as our soldiers do for our country, and this allusion strongly reveals the theme of "Freedom Demands Sacrifice"

This theme is showed in Old Glory in different ways. The first way it is shown is when Granda sacrifices his life to try to persuade the people of america. This is representing the theme because Granda knows he is going to die when he leaves in the morning . This shows he was willing to make a major sacrifice to gain freedom. Another way freedom is represented is Donald doesn't sacrifice anything for freedom he just let's his great grandfather die. This shows you have to be willing to sacrifice for freedom because he did not sacrifice anything therefore he stayed unfree and controlled by the government.

In the story Donald stood for his country when Gran- Da tried to burn it. It was the right thing to do when Donald called the uncles he stood for his country and kept the thing to showed memories. when Gran- Da tried to burn the flag he was burning down people that sacrificed their lives during that time. It was the right thing that Donald had done. He helped his country.

In Old Glory, the theme emerges from the story by using Gran-Da as an example. For instance, when the SOS law was passed, Gran-Da tried to burn the flag to show that it didn't mean anything since the SOS law was passed. So to show that he wanted freedom of speech and other rights he marched up to town square and tried burning the flag. Later the SOS men came and shot him on sight. He had to sacrifice his own life so that society could start to see why freedom of speech and other rights are very important.

"Freedom demands sacrifice" is a theme of "Old Glory" because from Gran-da's point of view, if Gran-da didn't sacrifice his life then his point, of that the flag now means nothing since the SOS law was put into order and that they needed to take a stand and rebel against the Government, or the Uncles, wouldn't have been shown or conveyed. Also, from Donald he sacrificed his grandfather for the good of his family and the world. He loves his country and would do anything for it, even kill his own Grandfather.

Also gran da didn't care if the sos men were there because then he could know that the sos men knew what he meant at least a little bit.and then the word can spread.

The flag in this story was once a symbol of freedom, but now the flag does not have that meaning anymore. GranDa was against the SOS, and wanted to convince others to believe in him. This is how freedom demands sacrifice; in order to prove this to everyone else, he risked his life trying to explain his thoughts. But he was judged as "crazy" because everyone else was blinded by their own government; Donald was no exception. This theme tells us that our rights cannot be gained without consequences.

He tried to burn the flag (even though it was virtually impossible) and spoke things that the government didn't like. He didn't care that SOS was here to absolutely annihilate him. He wanted to take a stand against the 2041 United States. He thought the flag had no meaning anymore and demanded freedom. However, he was killed by the SOS men. It was actually against freedom. Even though the SOS gave him a chance to stop, they still killed him right then and there, and in this time you get sent to jail, and go to a jury to prove your innocents and things like that. Grand-da sacrificed his life in front of the SOS, by trying to show that that was not the way of freedom by trying to burn the flag, and even after he knew that it would not work because it was fire proof. Another relation is that the flag was shows freedom by the blood that was shed doing wars and that's how we earned freedom, by fighting for it, and for our rights.
