Renaissance art focused on realism because the Renaissance was a time of hope and change in Europe - "Life is Good!" In the 19th century Romanticism (a movement to paint the past as better than the present) showed artists opinions about the horrors of imperialism through nightmarish dream paintings (life is bad - Europeans are harming people around the world!) Early 20th century art focused on abstraction - Life is SOOOO BADDDDD! I don't even want to paint reality at all. Cubism, Surrealism, Fauvism were all forms of art that distorted reality. If people are going to use their technological advances to destroy one another there is nothing in this world I want to paint!!! Even a rejection of art altogether was popular.
