After the War of 1812, the Federalist party was barely a national party and was weaker because people doubted their loyalty during the war. So when the Republican James Monroe ran in the Election of 1816, there was no real Federalist opposition, and he won easily. The Federalist and Republican differences seemed to disappear, as well as political problems, and a newspaper in Boston dubbed this time period as "The Era of Good Feelings" which would appear to be true as Monroe, for the first time since George Washington's presidency, toured America. Everywhere he went, people greeted him and were delighted in having him there. Monroe even went to Boston, the old home of the Federalists, and stayed with the 2nd president, John Adams. In two years, he toured again, and won the reelection in 1820. James Monroe represented a truly united nation.
