In this game, all the graphic elements appear in the form of a hologram projected from the main character’s suit. Moreover, opening any screen — like the inventory, a map, the weapon selector — the game is neither paused nor slowed down in order to maintain the illusion. This type of UI design, called&nbsp;<strong>non-diegetic representation</strong>, completely separates interface elements from the game world.</p><p>Battle Chasers: Nightwar</p><p>In the image above, there are lots of colors bars that have missing portions, and numbers overlaid on them.&nbsp;</p><p>And what we’re talking about of course is the “health bar.” Or sometimes “magic” or “experience” or “resource.” It can represent many things, but it’s basically a bar graph of the amount of something you have out of the total amount you could have.&nbsp;</p><p>I think it’s cool that we have a shared and common language amongst gaming that allows for this to exist. But, I more firmly believe that these types of things should make sense&nbsp;<strong>without</strong>&nbsp;requiring the knowledge and context of 30+ years of video games. Looking at the above image as if I had no clue about video games, can I understand that the green probably means “health” while the blue probably means “magic?” Definitely not. This is pretty much every Kinect game, plus some of Sony’s EyeToy games.</p><p><em>Incomplete tangible natural mapping</em>&nbsp;gives players something that feels like an in-game object.&nbsp;<em>Wii Sports</em>, for example, uses this kind of mapping when it asks you to use the wiimote like a tennis racket or golf club. A lot of Playstation Move controls are going to fit in here, too, like the ping pong game or the archery game in&nbsp;<em>Sports Champions</em>.</p><p><em>Realistic tangible natural mapping</em>, though, is the most realistic kind of controller.
