Bradbury also emphasizes and utilizes entertainment and social media to enhance the idea that not all addictions are bad. An example of this would be how the fireman are all blessed with the beauty of fire. As said by Beatty ,"what is there about fire that's so lovely? no matter what age we are, what draws us to it?" (Bradbury 109) in which asks the question of why fire is so lovely. Pertaining to the story, the fire is a form of entertainment for the fireman. The fireman are addicted to the sight, smell, and idea of fire in which is positive due to the fact that being a fireman is a highly needed job which makes it easier to do their jobs since they love it so much. Furthermore, having this positive addiction creates a sense of foreshadowing within the novel. What this is foreshadowing is that this addiction will create an issue of loyalty between Guy and the rest of the fireman. Although all of them are addicted to fire, it’s what they do with it in which sets them apart and will create a lack of loyalty to each other. Another example of a positive addiction would be how Mildred is addicted to the 'relatives.' In the story, Guy watches as Mildred runs to the him in order to get right back listening to the relatives, "this time, Mildred ran. The yammering voices stopped yelling in the parlor." (Bradbury 50). This is a positive addiction because of how it helps Mildred pass time. In this case, the relatives act as the social media in our lives. Unlike Guy, she has no job to do so instead she listens to the relatives in order to relieve herself of boredom. This also plays a role in how symbolism is a key factor in the story. What is being symbolized is the idea of how addiction is key role in everyday life. Without positive addiction our lives would not be the same, therefore concluding that the use of entertainment and social media creates not just negative addiction but also positive addictions.

Work Ethic

In the novel Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury expresses the idea that not all addictions are negative through the idea and examples of work ethic. An example of this would be Guy constantly talking to Clarisse everyday before he goes into work. In the story, Guy tells us “And as many times he came out the house and Clarisse was there somewhere in the world” (Bradbury 25). This means that everytime Guy left for work he waited until Clarisse would come up to talk to him. This contributes to work ethic because he did this everyday until he had to leave for work. This work ethic is a positive thing because Clarisse often showed Guy the ‘big picture’ and made him think more. This caused this rebellious nature in Guy which creates this positive influence in society even though what he does is wrong (stole books). This work ethic also causes indirect characterization to occur about Guy. Since he visits Clarisse everyday that means what they are talking about seems to interest Guy therefore causing Guy to change more/more rebellious. Another example of this work ethic would be the amount of books that Guy has stolen from each house that had been burned. As the reader learns to know, Guy had been collecting these books for awhile now. In the story, Guy says “When he was done he looked down upon some twenty books lying at his wife’s feet” (Bradbury 63). This means that Guy has been constantly been doing this therefore proving his addiction to his work ethic. This work ethic is good because it shows how committed Guy is as well as increasing this rebellious nature of his. With this work ethic, this also causes a moment of foreshadowing to occur. This foreshadowing shows us that Guy’s overall work ethic isn’t going to be stopped when it comes to rebelling therefore relating foreshadow back to the idea of addiction. In conclusion, Guy’s work ethic within the story is a positive addiction to have.

In today’s society we often see addiction having a negative connotation to its name. Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 counteracts this proposition by predicting what society was going to become. He predicted and emphasized the idea that not all addictions are bad especially considering that of entertainment and social media. Just as the society of Fahrenheit 451, positive addictions are apart of our everyday lives. Furthermore, Dr. Peg O’Connor says positive addictions refer to that of activities that enhance life as well as providing a pleasure that other activities can not (O’Connor). Furthermore, O’Connor also explains a fellow colleague’s theory about the idea of positive addictions, his name being Dr. William Glasser. Dr.Glasser’s theory is that “ positive addictions ‘strengthen us and make our lives more satisfying.’ They also enable us to ‘live with more confidence, more creativity, and more happiness, and usually in much better health” (O’Connor). This type of activity includes that of entertainment and social media. As for many people in today’s society, running is an example of entertainment and a major key part of satisfaction for the body. Therefore, running and other forms of exercise are all activities that would be positive addictions (Goeztke). This is so due to research conducted by Dr. Glasser who analyzed the effects exercise has on humans as well as the effects of not doing any exercise. While doing these activities Glasser explains that the body experiences a state of mind called euphoria which means that body and mind are acting as one (Goeztke). In his experiment, Glasser explains that without such exercise, “ they experienced classic withdrawal symptoms when they no longer did the activity” (Goeztke). This means that since you’re experiencing these withdrawal symptoms your body wants to keep on doing such activity. Furthermore, exercise is a positive addiction due to the positive effect it has on the body therefore proving Bradbury’s prediction. Another real world example of a positive addiction would be the use of social media. As most people see social media as a burden and a negative addiction, Bradbury portrays it has a positive addiction. Current studies show that kids/teens who use social media have an easier time communicating to others through technology in which translates over to a real life interaction (Brodwin). As said by Erin Brodwin, “Kids who struggle to make friends in person may use digital tools to compensate for this and build positive relationships..” (Brodwin). Due to social media, teens are now able to communicate easier and more effectively through the use of digital conversations. Another effect that social media has is the availability to access other people and entertainment. For example, a man named Larry Burt is now facing a 15 year Federal sentence for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana (Thomas Jr.). What got him through it was different forms of positive addiction, specifically entertainment and social media. He found a positive addiction and satisfaction within marathon running but without the use of social media we wouldn’t even be hearing his story. Without the positive addiction of social media, Burt is now able to express his story. Therefore, there isn’t just negative addictions, but there is also forms of positive addictions. the positive effects of entertainment and social media. In conclusion,, Bradbury is correct in saying that social media is a positive addiction rather than a negative one.

Work Ethic

Bradbury’s prediction of there also being positive addictions is also correct especially considering that of work ethics. In today’s society, people often fall victim to thinking that work addiction and work ethic are the same idea. The difference between the two creates the correlation with work ethic being a positive addiction rather than a negative one. Furthermore, the difference between the two is how you interpret the work ethic your doing. An example of this would be Michelle Kerr who was thought as having a work addiction due to the countless hours of working she had done. She said this about her work addiction/ethic, “ strong work ethic who is willing to put in countless hours to achieve my goals and serve others with my work, however you could also think that I’m completely overdoing it and define myself off being busy and that without work I’m unsure of what I really have to offer as a person” (Kerr). Therefore, some see this as a work addiction but there are some who believe this as having a strong work ethic which then opens the gateway for positive addiction to occur. An example of this work ethic would be the activities of exercise and running. Although running and other forms of exercise are entertainment for some, the idea still applies over to that of work ethics. Once the effects of exercise have kicked in, all you want to do is just that in which creates this addiction to keep doing so. People who do so, “ schedule exercise carefully around other aspects of their life” (Admin) now have this addiction to exercise in which it becomes apart of their daily routine. Since the time devoted into this has increased massively, exercise is now also a positive addiction pertaining to work ethics. Another example of this would be the playing of video games, especially the motivation it creates. Although society creates this negative connotation of video games psychologists have proven that it is indeed a positive activity to do so. Furthermore, Dr Romeo Vitelli says that “Immediate feedback also keeps players in the ‘zone of proximal development’ which allows them to solve problems on their own while working towards specific goals” (Vitelli). Due to this constant feedback, this allows for the player to create this motivation to try to defeat each level. This motivation then creates work ethic due to the constant feedback/encouragement to accomplish beating that level. Another example of this type of work ethic would be the game called World of Warcraft. The games is heavily emerged within a competitive play style in order to defeat other opponents. As said by Daria Kuss, a reasearcher of the topic, "allow players to achieve game goals, be social, and immerse in the game" (Kuss). Just as before, these video games give a strong work ethic to those playing the game. Therefore, video games correlate with the positive addiction of work ethics. In conclusion, Bradbury is correct in predicting that there is positive addiction in our society, especially considering that of work ethic.
