Mary grew up in a poor family. Her mother and father were quite wealthy but when they started a family they became destitute of money. Even though her family was poor she got an alright education from the private school she went to and from her father that studied priesthood. To help her family with money she got a lot of jobs including a teaching job at the catholic denominational school. At this point all Mary wanted was to have any kind of religious life.

MARY'S LETTER

This is an example of a writing that Mary wrote to god about her troubles.

"My Lord,

Will you kindly permit me to write a few thoughts which it troubles me to keep from you, and yet which I can hardly express when talking to you.

I would speak them, my Lord, and I am sure you would wish me to be unreserved with you, but I seem to lose courage; in trying to be unreserved I would displease my Bishop.

It is in a most docile and humble spirit, my Lord, that I can venture to say what are and have been for many years the thoughts of my heart. I longed for a Religious life, one in which I could serve God and His poor neglected little ones, in poverty and disregard of the world and its fleeting opinions.

When an opportunity of entering another religious Community was offered to me, family circumstances, for one reason, prevented my availing myself of it, but there was another reason as well, known only to my Confessor, namely, that in the Order I could not find what my heart craved. I looked for a poverty more like unto that practised in the early Religious Orders of the Church, a poverty which in its practice would make a kind of reparation to God for the little confidence now placed in His Divine Providence by so many of His creatures. Circumstances, as well as choice, having for many years compelled me to live as a teacher, I saw so much of the evils attending a merely secular course of education, that all my desires seemed to centre in a wish to devote myself to poor children and the afflicted poor, in some very poor Order."

This excerpt of writing above to me demonstrates Marys outgoing commitment to god and helping the less fortunate. In this excerpt from Mary's letter you can read about some of hers barriers that she faced during her time. This writing clearly shows Mary's missionary mind.

Mary was born of Scottish parents , alexander Mackillop and Flora Macdonald in Fitzroy, Victoria on the 15th of January 1842. Mary was the eldest of 8 kids , three girls and four boys.. Alexander Mackillop her father was the main source of education for Mary and her siblings. Mary's dad wasn't a school teacher but he had study priesthood for some years. By Mary's dad studding priesthood this had a strong influence on how Mary saw and experienced the world. Mary lived in a town with little support of education, unhygienic living conditions and many of her friends living without relievable food, water and shelter. In 1863 Mary had an opportunity to become a teacher at Portland catholic denominational school where she can hopefully make a different in peoples life's forever.

World behind the text:

In the time of Jesus Christ people believed that the work of god was present in everyday life good events and bad events included. There was no sense of the scientific principles that we understand today. Therefore, miracles were an indication of gods power and his actions.

World of the text:

In the gospel of mark the crowd of people is said to be like a sheep without Shepard, it is said that Jesus has compassion upon them and so begins teaching them. This technique of comparing Jesus to a Shepard and the crowd to his flock indicates that while this miracle was taking place the purpose was to ultimately learn about the power and compassion of god which was demonstrated through Jesus.

World in front of the text:

Like many of Jesus' healing miracles stories the feeding of the 100 was intended to demonstrate God's compassions for human beings and the responds to people in need. The gospel today is how we should treat our neighbours like how we would like to be treated so if you did something to them think of what u did to them they did to you how would u feel. This gospel suggest that you should always have trust in god and that he will assist you when its needed. I feel this gospel story is sending a message to you may different people that only have a little but with using what you have well and smart that you can do anything like feed 100 people with little as loafs of bread and two fish. This gospel is making you think about the problem, action and reaction of the text also along with the internal and external changes. I feel like Mary overall was just trying to think of other before her own need helping everyone in need.

Mary was raised as a catholic. She was brought up on CST (catholic social teachings. It has had a big impact on her. She pursued a religious life from a young age. She learn't that helping people is the right path thanks to CST. The bible (especially the new testament) teaches us to love our neighbours. This is probably where Mary MacKillop got her inspiration to help people. The churches social teachings definitely impacted Mary.

They are both people that are prophets, kings and priests.that are prophets, kings and priests. A prophet is someone that spreads God's word and accepts people opinions. Mary did this by teaching poor kids religion. A king is someone that has supreme authority over a territory. A priest is a person who is the bridge between God and people. A priest is someone that has to make sacrifices. Mary and Jesus were all of these.

O God, you raised up Mary MacKillop in your Church to found a Religious Order dedicated to the education of children. May we, as members of the church today be attentive to the children in our midst who receive no education and to those with little knowledge of their faith. May we, like her, follow Christ the teacher as we preach the Gospel through our daily lives. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen
