11. How is Emma Lazarus' poem used by Springfield police? And what is the effect of this?

When the police officers say they will deport the poor, the tired and the huddled masses, they are quoting Emma Lazarus' poem, while meaning the opposite.
This is a contradiction, when they say they will deport the people, they earlier on meant to take in. This is the basic principle and idea of the american dream.
The effect is therefore ridicule of America.

9. How does the episode portray immigrants in relation to the American dream?

They achieve and fulfill the American dream. They want to be American even more than the Americans. The Americans don't see how the immigrants are merely just doing what the American's ancestors did. The Americans don't know what privilege they have. The immigrants are portrayed positively.

13. How does the episode end? In your
opinion, is it a happy ending? What do you think is the message of the episode?

It’s quite satirical. Apu only first NOW (at the end) became a true American. Society only accepts, and looks towards him (as an American) at the end after he passed the test. Funny that you now have to pass a test to become an American, when America was all about accepting “everyone” from all around the world. Willy on the other hand gets shipped out of the US.

12 Homer tries to teach Apu to be an
American by using an American Flag, a map, the legal system, the electrical
college (which is Canadian), American history and a huge chart showing a
stovepipe hat. What does that tell you about Homer’s idea of being an American?
Do you agree with this view?

He does not tell anything about the american values instead he shows some american things. He does not know what the flag, the map and all the other things symbolises. This tell us that Homer doesn not know the american values just the iconic things about america. The stovepipe hat and the electrical college has been adopted from other countries. The hat and the electrical shows that the american culture is a product of immigration. {6q
