The act required that the colonists have to pay for a stamp or seal when they Bought paper items.   Since the British needed to pay war debts and defend their territories, they passed this act.  The colonists were very angry at this and started protesting. The colonists even formed a secret society called the Sons of Liberty. Samual Adams helped organize this group. They frightened tax collectors. Businesses refused by not even buying stamps. Finally, the British repealed the Stamp Act and replaced it with a new one after nine colonies met in New York saying that this was unfair. The new act was the Declaratory Act saying that Parliament, a group of British Legislators had the power to make laws for the colonies in all cases no matter the cause. Leaders in Boston sent Benedict Arnold and 400 other men to New York State to get some supplies because they were running low. They successfully captured the supplies. While this was happening, the patriots in Boston were trying to keep the British in Boston. On June 17, the British saw that the colonists dug in at Breed’s hill. This means that the British would have to cross all of Boston harbor and fight uphill. They do not get the height advantage. They advanced uphill and were running low on ammo. The British leaders told the soldiers to not shoot until you see the whites of their eyes. They went for three tries. At this point, the colonists ran out of ammo and had to retreat. Although the colonists lost this war, they have proven they can fight the British, and they can retreat, get a new plan, and come back strong. He stationed his cannons on Nook’s Hill overlooking General Howe’s position, one of the British generals. Howe left the Hessians- Mercenaries (soldiers who fought for mo day and not for loyalty.) Washington crosses the Delaware River On Christmas night 1776 and surprised the, with an attack. The Patriots took more than 900 prisoners. General Washington marched his men to Princeton while Howe was planning a counterattack. Howe retreated from Trenton to Princeton and planned an attack. While Howe was sneaking to Princeton down the road, George Washington attacked and the British retreated. General Howe’s troops and General Washington’s troops were part of this battle.
