Source: Lorimer, Rowland. “Globalization and Internationalization in Publishing.” Canadian Journal of Communication, vol. 17, no. 4, Apr. 1992, https://doi.org/10.22230/cjc.1992v17n4a697.

Origin - This is a secondary source and the author is Rowland Lorimer from the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University. And its published in the Canadian Journal of Communication in 1992. The journal provides a platform for academic research in communication - related fields, showing the reliability of the source.

Purpose - One purpose is to analyze the mechanisms promoting globalization in the publishing industries, using events in Eastern Europe as examples. Another purpose is to explore the mechanisms and efforts related to internationalisation in publishing. The research article is aimed at publishers, adults and people who are interested in economic developments

Content - The article identified four critical factors for global distribution of media products: content, language, entrepreneurship and management, and law, policy, and market organization. English is a major role/ facilitator. . It gives examples from Eastern Europe showing how Western publishers expanded through distribution, advertising, joint ventures, and more. It also talks about internationalisation, it's said as the trade in media products for national or community - based audiences between different - nation producers. Mechanisms include agency representation, rights sales, distribution agreements, and the rise of domestic industries in some countries. There aren't a lot of examples in Eastern Europe compared to globalizations though.

Value - Academically, it offers a analysis of globalization and internationalization in publishing, contributing to the academic understanding of the industry's evolution.

But it also helps publishers understand the global and international organization, enabling them to make better decisions.

Limitations - Since it was written in 1992, some of the data and examples are outdated. The publishing industry has gone through significant changes, especially with digital media. While it uses Eastern Europe as example for globalization, it may not fully represent the experiences of other regions. And it focuses mainly on traditional publishing and didn't really address things like self - publishing, e - books, and online distribution platforms.

For authors, the path varies by region: North Americans typically work with US-based agents and New York publishers, Europeans often engage with London-based UK publishers, and authors elsewhere can choose either US or UK pathways depending on their goals. To publish internationally, authors first assess a book’s global appeal with their agent, particularly for themes that transcend cultures. Foreign rights can be handled in two ways: agents may sell rights individually to foreign publishers (e.g., in Japan or Spain), who then manage translation, cover design, marketing, and distribution, offering separate advances and contracts—a more lucrative option. Alternatively, foreign rights can be included in the main deal with the English-language publisher, which assumes responsibility for international sales. International book fairs also play a role, allowing foreign publishers to scout titles from US and UK houses. Non-American authors can publish in the US by writing in English and appealing to American audiences, with the key step being to secure a compatible literary agent willing to pitch their work to US publishers, as location or background is not a barrier. Benefits for authors include expanded readership, increased revenue from royalties and advances, and the opportunity to see foreign markets adapt covers and engage with their work, potentially leading to international bestseller status. The article emphasises understanding rights management and regional strategies to navigate the interconnected global publishing landscape effectively.

The United States had the highest book sales revenue in 2020 at $23.6 billion, followed by Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy, reflecting how wealthier nations with strong cross-border trade networks dominate global publishing. Cross-border sales showed stark differences: the U.K. earned the largest share of revenue from foreign markets, followed by Spain, New Zealand, and Portugal, likely due to advantages in widely spoken languages (like English or Spanish) or cultural ties (such as Commonwealth connections). The COVID-19 pandemic, a global event, accelerated some trends: most countries published fewer physical books in 2020, though Italy saw a 25.6% increase. Lockdowns and supply chain disruptions pushed the industry toward digital publishing, which is more easily distributed globally. In summary, economic globalization has created a hierarchical publishing industry where wealthier nations and digital leaders dominate, while smaller or less digitally connected countries face challenges. It has driven the rise of digital content and cross-border sales but also highlighted inequalities in market access, language barriers, and cultural preservation.

It has expanded market scales, enabling publishers to reach global audiences and promoting the cross-border flow of books. For instance, the UK, as a publishing powerhouse, sells one-third of its annually published over 150,000 new books overseas, with the publishing industry becoming its largest creative industry.Globalization has also intensified competition. Publishers need to enhance international competitiveness to occupy market shares. Taking the London International Book Fair as an example, it focuses on copyright trade, boasts a professional operation mode, and has a perfect legal protection system, making it a benchmark in the industry. Moreover, it has moved towards a digital transformation. Driven by new technologies like the digital age and IP operations, the industry is moving towards diversified development. Copyright trade is no longer limited to physical books but extends to digital IP and cross-media fields. For example, the Harry Potter series has achieved enormous success through cross-media development from books to films and games. However, globalization has also brought challenges, such as the need to improve international copyright protection mechanisms and address the deficit in copyright trade in some countries.

In summary, economic globalization has brought both opportunities for expansion and competition, as well as challenges requiring adaptation through legal improvements and digital innovation for a more sustainable development.
