Abraham Lincoln said that "In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed." This means that he believes that the Civil War will fix our issue with being divided. His formal language changes his tone to being very powerful and convincing. He also said that "A house divided cannot stand.", this is true because if a house were cut in half, it would be impossible for it to stand against the pull of gravity. In his speech "House Divided" he even said "I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free."

The tone effect the speech because his confidence and persuasion effect the way people think of his opinion on slavery. In the text it states " Either the oppononets of slavery, will arrest a further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction" This shows that he has a strong opinion against slavery and wants both the North and South states to agree that slavery should not exsist and people should be able to live a free life just like everybody else.

The tone of this speech is as if to show that he believes truly in what he says. Lincoln states " Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction." Or itn states that we will send slavery into it's own destruction.

The use of formal language on this speech strengthens his argument because more people take him seriously. In his speech, he says, "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved-I do not expect the house to fall-but I do expect it will cease to be divided." With this language used, he gets his direct opinion across, and makes it sound more sophisticated and trustworthy. In conclusion, this is how using formal language can make a speech sound better.

In the text Abraham Lincoln said "in my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passes." So Lincoln thinks the war will solve their problems.(the division in the states.) So we disagree with slavery and think the war was necessary because violence may not always be the answer but in this state is was and was very necessary.

In his speech, he said, "Our cause, then, must be intrusted to, and conducted by its own undoubted friends-those whose hands are free, whose hearts are in the work-who do care for the result." (p.12) He wanted people to trust him with what he said.

The tone of Lincoln in the speech is very composed of what he is dscribing about. In the speech, he was persuasive. The speech has many different persuasive and factual statments, " The result is not doubtful. We shall not fail-if we standnfirm, we shall not fail." (Lincoln, 17) He is confident in the fact that they cant and wont fail to the fact of the results.

As it says in the text " I believe this government cant endure, permanently half slave and half free."(Pg 7, Lincoln). This is showing that Lincoln is using persuasive and confident language. :)

" We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated, with avowed, object, and confident promise of putting an end to slaver agitation" (par. 3). Referring to this evidence, he believes ending slavery will put many situations aside.
