Lon Po Po, Ed Young

In the story, a mother leaves her three children home alone as she goes out to go meet their grandmother, “Po Po.” They kids unknowingly let a wolf in, believing it to be their grandmother. They now have to find a way to escape the wolf. The book implies that not listening to those who are wiser will lead you to bad situations. The wolf tries to deceive the kids but the eldest, Shang, sees right through his facade. The younger kids then listen to her and she leads them out of the trouble. The illustrations help visualize that the wolf is a bad influence. And the kids are shown innocent, which really helps convey the message of the story. The book is great for grades 2-4, with the simple words and the entertaining story. It teaches the younger kids new words. Young, Ed. “Lon Po Po.” Philomel Books, 1989.

Radiant Child: the Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat

In the book, a little boy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, dreams of becoming a famous artist and eventually reaches his goal after a couple hardships. He didn’t let anything stop him, not his car accident or his mom’s illness. The book helps teach kids that they can achieve their goals if they don’t give up and work hard. It also teaches them that they won’t just automatically get what they want and that they have to work their way up by showing that Jean-Michel didn’t instantly become a famous artist, he had to start by graffitiing streets until he started getting recognition. The illustrations help convey that not everything has to be perfect for you to be successful. The book is great for grades 2-5 because the bright color captures attention and the story conveys a great message of never giving up. Steptoe, Javaka. “Radiant Child.” Little, Brown and Company, 2016.

A knight, the Red Cross Knight, goes to slay a dragon with a princess, Una, trailing along with him. He successfully kills the dragon after multiple attempts and almost dying many times and is able to wed with the princess as a reward at the end but he continues to be a soldier for the Fairy Queen as he had promised her and eventually earned his name, Saint George of Merry England. The book is great at teaching kids to never give up because the reward at the end will be greater than the hardships they endured during their journey but to never give up after getting what they want. The book is great for kids grade 1-4 since the book is in a fairytale setting and encourages kids to use their imaginations while still teaching a lesson of never giving up. Hodges, Margaret. “Saint George and the Dragon.” Grinna Hyman, Little, Brown and Company, 1984.

The story is about Jews being oppressed. Rumors were spreading about jews killing young Christian kids to make matzo. A Jewish man, Rabbi Loew, is angered and ends up creating Golem, named Joseph, from clay to help protect the Jews from slander and oppression. Enemies of the Jews are angered once Joseph successfully jails the people who slander the Jews because people have started realizing that the rumors were nothing but rumors. Once Joseph is finished with his work, protecting the Jews from any harm, he is forced to return to the earth as clay. The story teaches kids about oppression and assisting others. It is great for kids grade 3-5 because they are able to grasp the concept of oppression and know that it is an unkind thing. The illustrations show the devastating things the Jews had went through. Wisniewski, David. “Golem.” Clarion books, 1996.
