Over the years, he befriends many inmates, in particular, Ellis Redding "Red. The two become very close as Andy tries to adapt to prison life after years of hard time, with bullying from The Sisters, a corrupt warden, Andy has Red to lean on, throughout it all. As well as the torment of the prison, Andy is seen as a influence among the prison as he works to help men learn to read and getting funding for new books in their library and helps the warden do financial scams. Andy is able to maintain his sanity and dignity in prison not by physical force but by mental force. His smarts and confidence keep him going, which is seen when he persists to escape prison. After nearly 20 years of digging a hole through the wall and concealing it with a poster of Rita Hayworth he escapes one night, having to break through a sewer pipe to get out of the prison. After this he escapes from prison he leaves to the sunny coast of Zihuatanejo, Mexico using the scammed money from Warden Nortons. He is then joined by Red, who is finally paroled after nearly 30 years, and they walk into the sunset as the film fades out.

The setting of a movie depicts the mood, language used, characters personalities, problems that may occur, and even the final outcome of the film. The setting of the movie shows the audience the time frame of the film as well as the state that the characters have to live in. For example in the movie the prison is shown as a brutal place. People getting beat all the time, cold dark looking cells, terrible food, and downright terrifying guards. This being shown in the film allows the watcher to almost feel the pain or at least sympathise for the pain that the prisoners have to endure. If the prison was shown as a happy place where you could do whatever you want with minimal rules, then perhaps we would feel less sympathy for characters like Brooks or Red who had to serve large amounts of time within the walls. While getting to know the setting as the production continues, we also get to see how hard it would be to conduct and execute an escape such as the one that Andy completed, giving the audience massive suspense and eventually relief as it was described in the film on how he managed to get out.

He had been in jail for so long that he had never really seen modern technology such as cars. He was overwhelmed with normal. While he was in jail he was considered an important person because he had been there for so long. Once in the real world he was no body. Before he got released he threatened to kill one of the other inmates because he was scared to leave the only place where he felt at home. And time, of course." In the film And takes interest in collecting, polishing, and carving rocks. In a place like Shawshank, rocks are easily overlooked as they don't really have much significance to the inmates. When Andy acquires these rocks they don't appear like like they will develop into much. Slowly and patiently Andy begins methodically carving and polishing these plain rocks into beautiful creations. Andy uses the rocks to symbolize that something magnificent can be created from something as bland and plain as a rock. This is important to the story because Andy's rock collection symbolizes to Red that hope can be created even when you don't think it can be found.

The film contrasts this belief and shows how inmates after a long period of time begin to rely on prison to define their identity. In general, most of the inmates at Shawshank have become fully institutionalized by the prison lifestyle. For example, Brooks tries to kill a fellow inmate just so that he can live the rest of his days in Shawshank. This demonstrates how how many of the inmates lives are insignificant without prison. In a way, Shawshank State Penitentiary is almost like its own little world for the prisoners where they learn to find their significance, status, and roles in life. "The man's been in here fifty years, Heywood. Fifty years! This is all he knows. In here, he's an important man. He's an educated man. Outside, he's nothin'! Just a used up con with arthritis in both hands (Red)." "These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized (Red)." These quotes effectively describe the irony of prison at play in the film, The Shawshank Redemption.
