What?

For this week's activity, I went for a walk in my backyard with my 4-year-old son to collect items from our outdoor environment for an artwork. Our backyard is currently a bit of a construction site, so we found various items such as rocks, weeds, dirt, and grass. We took the time to talk about the different colours, textures, and shapes of the items we collected. The purpose of this activity was to create a visual representation of our outdoor space and reflect on our connection to it.

So What?

Initially, I thought this task would be straightforward since we frequently spend time outdoors. However, involving my son in the process added a new dimension to this experience. His curiosity and excitement about each item made me see our backyard through fresh eyes. We observed the rugged and smooth textures of our river rocks as well as the varied colours, the feel and smell of our natural dirt compared to the crusher dust, the mulched Ironbark from our old trees, the size of the weeds, and the vibrant green of the grass. This sensory exploration was rich with educational and bonding experiences.

This activity offered a deeper level of mindfulness and observation, allowing me to appreciate the beauty and diversity in an otherwise chaotic space. My son's enthusiasm reminded me of the wonder that nature holds, which I sometimes overlook in my daily routine.

I liked how this experience allowed me to reconnect with nature and see my environment from a new perspective. It surprised me how much joy and learning came from such simple observations. The challenge of arranging the collected items into a coherent artwork made me appreciate the creative process and the importance of personal expression in art.

What Now?

From this activity, I learned that art can be created from everyday elements and that involving children in such tasks can enhance observational skills and connection to nature. This understanding can be particularly valuable in an educational setting, allowing students to express their unique perspectives and connections to their surroundings through art.

By incorporating these insights into my teaching practice, I aim to help students establish connections with their spaces and show them that an artwork doesn't need to be perfect to have meaning and be beautiful. Additionally, I will continue to involve my son in similar activities, nurturing his curiosity and appreciation for nature. This approach will enrich the learning experience and enhance students' appreciation for the natural world around them.

What?

This week's task involved crafting objects from recycled materials, with a focus on sustainability. Collaborating with my 4-year-old, we decided to create a cow, a car, and a cloud, aligning with his kindergarten's 'C' week theme. I used an egg carton as my primary resource, utilising individual cups as versatile building blocks. With some additional recycled materials and paint, our creations came to life. Additionally, I transformed a small box into a country scene for the following week's activity. Our project delved into artistic expression and sustainability while incorporating language development as we explored words starting with 'c'.

So What?

This hands-on activity fostered the development of my creative thinking and problem-solving skills while including my child in the decision-making process added an extra layer of excitement and meaning to the project. His curiosity about the progress and eagerness to see the final creations emphasised the importance of giving students agency in their learning. Additionally, the use of recycled materials to create art highlighted the significance of integrating real-world issues, such as sustainability, into art activities. This integration enhances students' understanding of the relevance of their learning in relation to broader societal concerns.

Now What?

Reflecting on this experience, I recognise the value of actively involving students in the creative decision-making process. In future activities, I plan to support students in leading their own design projects, providing guidance and resources while allowing them autonomy in making creative choices. By aligning activities with students' interests, I aim to cultivate authentic arts learning experiences that empower students to take ownership of their education and engage meaningfully with real-world issues like sustainability.

What?

This week's project involved creating a stop-motion movie about 'sustainability' using our previously crafted recycled materials, in my case, a cow, car, and cloud with a country scenery. The movie opens with the cow walking on stage, emitting characteristic "moos" before comically releasing a fart cloud, symbolising methane emissions, which is a hot topic in the issues of 'sustainability'. Subsequently, the car arrives and ingeniously connects a funnel from its fuel tank to the cow's posterior, illustrating the concept of capturing methane gas as an alternative energy source. The car then revs its engine and takes off in a cloud of methane gas, with the movie concluding with a close-up view of the cow and a confused-sounding "moo", adding a touch of humour to the story.

So What?

This stop-motion movie provided a creative platform to explore the concept of 'sustainability' in an entertaining yet thought-provoking manner. The use of recycled materials in the movie props further reinforces the theme of 'sustainability', demonstrating the transformative power of repurposing resources to mitigate environmental impact. By incorporating humour and visual storytelling, I aimed to engage viewers while delivering a message about alternative energy sources and sustainable practices. Overall, this project facilitated meaningful engagement with complex environmental issues, highlighting the potential of art as a catalyst for social change.

Now What?

Reflecting on this experience, I recognise the power of multimedia storytelling as a tool for promoting environmental awareness and inspiring action. I intend to incorporate more multimedia projects into my teaching practice, leveraging students' creativity to address complex topics such as 'sustainability'. Integrating multimedia projects like stop-motion animation enhances students' creative expression and cultivates critical thinking skills as they conceptualise and communicate complex ideas visually.

What?

This week's activity involved developing a choreographed movement sequence to express the defining physical and behavioural features of a native Australian mammal. I chose the kangaroo and conducted extensive research to understand its defining characteristics, such as its hopping gait and its unique way of scratching. Using this information, I created a short dance sequence that emulated the kangaroo's movements while also considering the aesthetic and storytelling aspects of the dance. Given my heavily pregnant state, I adapted the movements to include actions like scouting and scratching that were manageable for me physically.

So What?

Reflecting on this activity, I found it physically demanding due to my pregnancy, which was a challenge I had to overcome by adapting the movements to include actions that were manageable for me physically. This highlighted the need for adaptable and inclusive classroom activities. Translating the kangaroo's characteristics into expressive dance moves required deep understanding and creativity. Despite the physical challenges, the activity reinforced the value of integrating the arts into the curriculum. It demonstrated how experiential learning through the arts can enhance engagement, creativity, and understanding of content, even in challenging circumstances.

Now What?

Moving forward, I am committed to incorporating the lessons learned from this activity into my teaching practice. I will ensure inclusivity and adaptability for all students by designing flexible activities that accommodate all, including those with physical limitations. This experience underscored the importance of providing options and adjustments that enable every student to participate fully and creatively. In addition to adaptability, I aim to further explore how arts integration can deepen student engagement and understanding across different subjects. By continuing to refine my skills in designing movement-based activities that align with curriculum objectives, I can create more meaningful learning experiences for students. This includes fostering a supportive classroom environment where creativity is encouraged, and students feel empowered to express themselves through various artistic forms. Furthermore, I will actively seek professional development opportunities to enhance my knowledge and strategies for integrating arts effectively into the curriculum. This ongoing learning will enable me to innovate and refine my teaching methods, ensuring that arts education continues to play a vital role in promoting overall student development.

What?

This week's activity involved two art-making exercises integrating visual arts and music to explore emotions. The first task required us to follow specific instructions to create an abstract drawing using lines, circles, and colours. For the second task, we listened to 'The Carnival of the Animals: Aquarium' and created a continuous line drawing representing the emotions and sensations evoked by the music. Both activities were designed to demonstrate how the elements of art and music can be taught experientially, offering a practical approach to integrating these disciplines into the classroom.

So What?

Reflecting on these activities, I found them surprisingly enjoyable and therapeutic, providing a welcome break from a busy schedule. Despite following the same instructions, each participant's artwork was unique, highlighting the personal and subjective nature of art. This experience reinforced the idea that there is no single 'correct' way to create art, an important and liberating lesson for students. The integration of music and visual arts allowed us to explore emotions and concepts through both mediums, fostering a deeper understanding of artistic disciplines and enhancing creative and emotional intelligence. These activities illustrated the educational benefits of teaching art and music through hands-on, experiential learning, making it more engaging and memorable for students.

Now What?

Looking ahead, I am excited to incorporate similar activities into my classroom. I plan to design lessons that seamlessly blend visual arts and music, creating a safe and inclusive environment that encourages students to take creative risks. I also intend to use children's books as a gateway to exploring emotions and incorporate art and music activities as mindfulness practices. By implementing these strategies, I hope to create a holistic and engaging learning environment that nurtures students' creativity, emotional intelligence, and appreciation for the arts. This aligns with the broader goals of integrating arts education into the curriculum, enhancing student engagement, creativity, and integrated learning.
