This poem has a pretty set idea on what family is. It gives us the idea that family is blood, in more than one sense of the word.

When one says "family is blood", it implies that they're talking about a family bloodline. How members in a family are connected not only emotionally, but literally biologically connected by blood.
This is shown in the poem, as the son is going to visit his parents, who in turn are living with his grandfather. This is showing the three generations of his family bloodline, his grandfather, his parents, and now him.

Another

The poem is displaying that the family used to have a strong connection in between themselves, but it slowly weakened and changed as the years went on and the boy/man got older.

The family is facing difficulties. This is evident in "My mother's hug is awkward, as if the space between her open arms were reserved for a child, not this body of a man", the line uses caesura in the line, "... reserved for a child, not this body of a man", the use of caesura is a representation of the distance and separation in between the mother and her son. The separation in the line and the distance in between the two characters is displaying the fact that the family, especially after all this time, is still facing difficulties.

The poem "Coming Home" presents the idea that 'Family' is usually taken for granted.

A quote from the poem in the las stanza says, "My grandfather pour the wine. his unsteady hand makes the neck of the bottle shiver on the lip of each glass; it is a tune he plays faster each year."

This connotes that even as the grandfather grew weaker each year, he still loves the writer so much that he's still willing to take care and serve the writer, even in the smallest gestures. This also proves that the writer is starting to notice that his family cannot escape the inevitable, and that, like every human being, they will get weaker and will face death as they grow older. At this realisation, the writer feels the fear of losing his family and guilt for not appreciating them enough and eagerly choosing to leave them as he got the opportunity. Thus, confirming that he took them for granted.

Family is presented as a loving home with endless comfort. The mother "kneads the dough, flipping it and patting before laying in again." These are the baking steps which symbolise maternal love,
it is the allegory of the mother guiding her son to become a strong and independent individual. The flour "dusting the hairs on her cheek, smoothing out winkles." The use of personification shows the youth of the mother gave her energy to take care of her son. This shows family is presented as a domestic, loving home with endless comfort.

Family is also presented as tough love. The "dad still goes and soaks himself in the rain.Up to his elbows in hedge",this shows it is tough to raise a child in his teen years and that family will always be there to heal and support us through thick or thin. The word "hedge" symbolises that a child is like a growing hedge and needs constant love and care. Dad's "frozen breaths snagged on the blackthorn." The word "blackthorn" has a dark connotation and "thorn" symbolises pain. This shows that it is painful to raise a child and therefore family is presented as tough love.

Family is represented in very physical, tactile analogies and manifestations. The poem represents the father and the mother in their stereotypical places; the mother is in the kitchen cooking whereas the father is outside working. "When we're all seated, my grandfather pours the wine" also a stereotypical patriarch as he's the oldest and pouring the wine for everyone. The first part, "my mother's hug is awkward" seems to show that she hasn't seen her son for a long time and she's not used to hugging him as a grown man. The author writes as though these traditional occupation or habits are comforting and there is a warmth in his observations.

The poem shows that family is always there. The words "again: and "still" are reassuring adverbs of permanence which associates with family always being there for you anytime and anywhere whenever you need them. The first stanza of the poem could also be associated to a kitchen which con-notates safety and domestic because "you: are inside your own home thus showing that family will always be there for you and lend you a helping hand.
Family is also presented as maternal love and care in the family. The phrase "flipping it and patting before laying it again" associates with the mother raising the child properly ever since he was a baby so he could grow up to be a successful man as he is now.The kitchen also represents the preparation of meals as meals are prepared in the kitchen thus associating with the mother preparing the best for her child no matter how tiring it is which proves that there is maternal love and care in a family.

In this poem, family is presented as an egg. Seemingly inanimate yet filled with life, safe and at the same time a place associated with life.

In the first stanza a sense of life, inanimateness and safety is illustrated. The image of mother 'kneading the dough' has connotations to the phrase 'bun in the oven' which is a saying for pregnancy and thus a start of life. In this stanza verbs like 'flip', 'pat', 'lay', 'dust' and smooth are used, they generally are associated with positive connotation such as safety, care, warmth and nurture. In the context of egg, the life is currently safely protected within the shell. However, adverb 'again' is used signing that the persona is no longer an infant. The adverb combined with the following lines where 'flour smooths out' mother's 'wrinkles'. An image of reminiscence is presented in a way that appears magical and dramatic. It implies the power and stability of familiar love and nurture, for even years after persona's adult years he can still return to the sense of nurture which remains inanimate since the beginning of life.

In the second stanza the image of a life emerging out of the egg is drawn while still revolving around a sense of inanimateness. The reappearing 'hole' with its 'edges laced with wool' imply that something escaped out of the 'hedge' through the hole. It has connotations to the image of life thrusting out into the world out of the shell of an egg. It implies that the persona no longer is beneath the shells of familiar egg but out in the real world beyond the hedges. The act of father fixing the hole combined with imagery 'frozen breaths snagged on the thorn' imply that the world or the sheer act of growing up solely is tough. Furthermore in collaboration with the adverbs of permanence 'again' and 'still' create a sense of unchanging parental protection which communicates back to my analogy of how the poet present family like an egg. In which its shells represent parental protection and its appearance where it looks almost like lifeless object mirroring the permanent familiar love and nurture.

This poem represents family as blood. It is possible for the wine in stanza three line one to represent blood as birth wine and blood hold connotations towards mortality. The wine may also be red wine to further convey blood. Within the second line of the third stanza, The grandfather's "unsteady hand" shoes how taking care of a family may require a lot of blood, sweat and tears. In the poem the grandfather may represent the higher position of the bloodline since he's the elder of the family. The pouring of the wine can also be seen as a ceremonial procedure as time is running out and the speaker has to carry the bloodline. Therefore the poem is trying to convey family as blood.

Family is presented as a persistent sense of comfort. In the poem, the mother’s “hug is awkward, as if the space between her open arms is reserved for a child, not this body of a man.” This displays the fact that the poet’s mother is still treating him like a child despite the fact that he is already an adult, telling us that she would rather comfort him as a child and protect him from the harsh “adult world”, without realizing that her son has already stepped into adulthood. This shows the comfort of an everlasting maternal love that serves as an eternal sense of security.

The writer talks about how nothing has changed in the few years while he was gone. This conveys how much time has past and the once small, innocent little boy is now a independent, fully grown man. The mother is so used to her young child that the thought of him growing up is very aberrant to her. The mother had not seen her child in so long that her seemingly 'awkward' hug is still meant for a young boy. Showing that she refuses to believe he's growing up and she's still reliving the past.

The simile " Dad still soaks himself in the rain" suggest that there is a closeness that exists among the family members and the speaker knows their habits by memory and by heart. "Still soaks" emphasis that it is nothing new to dad like how he has generally done it, and still does it. It generally brings out an idea of how familiar they are to each other even though they haven't seen each other in a long while.

In the poem "Coming Home", family is presented as ageing but never dying.
In the first stanza, the author points out his mother's rigid arms that fit the body of a child rather than that of a full grown man, signifying the time passed since he was a boy and his mother's refusal in accepting her baby boy as grown up. He also shows his theme of ageing in his personification of the flour 'smoothing out wrinkles' He then goes on to express his fathers habits, 'Dad still goes and soaks himself in the rain.' The word 'still' indicates that it's a repetitive action, of habitat ,emphasizing the years that have passed as he again goes and digs at the' hole that appears every winter.' Lastly, the author goes on to write about his grandfather who pours the wine with a ' tune he plays faster each year.' The clinking of the wine cups against the bottle of wine because of his arthritis, is the tune. He again emphasizes on ageing by using the metaphor of the "tune getting faster each year" as his grandfather gets older and older and his arthritis gets worse and worse. Although his family and he himself appear to be ageing in the poem, the author also presents the idea of it never ending as he comes home again every year and reunites with his family in something so small and insignificant like a dinner, indicating it's importance and strength, implying that it'll never die. The poem uses this to show the process of ageing and sense of immortality in his "family."

i think the poets trying to represent the family is having difficulties. this can be seen when the poet says,' my mother's hug is awkward.' the poet doesn't seem to be very excited to see his mother after such a long time. he finds the hug awkward because he is a grown man and he thinks his mother's hands were made to hug a child, not a grown up man. this brings me back to my point that the family is having difficulties.

in the poem coming home, family is presented as always there. in the first stanza the poet says 'my mothers hug is awkward'. this might mean that when him and his mother hug it doesnt feel the same as it used to as he hasnt hugged her in long time. however the mother still makes the effort to hug him. therefore family is presented as always there.

The poem presents family in a way that no matter how long you go without seeing each other, everything will still be the same once you see them again. This is shown when the words 'still' and 'again' are used. It is also shown when the mother gives her child an 'awkward hug'. The words still and again are used to create the effect that everything is still the same and that they still do all the same old things again. The mothers awkward hug shows that she still hugs her child and treats him the way she used to; as if no matter what, he will still be her baby. This shows that even though they are all growing older, everything is still the same.
