1. Be Proactive-You are in charge of yourself

Located on the the corner of the Graben and Kärntner Strasse, there is a strange chunk of wood filled with nails that were driven into it over several centuries. There is a wonderful story about being proactive, that varies depending on who's telling it.

The story tells of a locksmiths' apprentice who wanted the skills of his master. Instead of training hard and working towards mastery, he goofed off, playing games with other kids in town.
One day, his teacher tasked him with getting some clay, but of course, the boy played. When it got late, the boy realized he would be in trouble. But a man clad in red (secretly the devil) made a deal with the boy: he would make the boy a master locksmith as long as he never missed another Sunday Mass. The boy took the deal, becoming a master locksmith, but continued his playful ways. Over the next few days, the boy was able to impress his master with every task that was asked of him.
Later that first day, the devil made an impenetrable lock and placed it on the door of St. Stephan's Cathedral. Smiths from all over traveled to Vienna to try and remove it; all failed. Each left a nail in the wood as a sign of good luck for the next person.
Of course, when the next Sunday came, the boy was busy playing. When the boy realized what day it was, he hurried, trying to make it to Sunday Mass. When he arrived, he found that he couldn't get the door open. Even his skills could not remove the lock. The devil, having successfully tricked the boy, took his soul.

If you love classical music or learning about the science of sound, you should visit the Haus der Musik in Vienna. Here you can learn about some of the biggest names in classical music: Bach, Mozart, and Strauss to name a few.
At the museum, you can learn about how some of the composers created plans to help them write music. Creating entire operas and other pieces is no easy task. So some composers used codes and numbers for writing music. These codes of numbers/letters corresponded to specific notes or rhythms. What a great way to go into a task with a plan in place!

Visit Baden, a spa town just a quick train ride out of Vienna. Before you enjoy the relaxing, warm waters of the thermal baths, take a couple hours to enjoy the sites and get a fantastic view of the city. There are trails that wind up the hills of Baden that will challenge you, while giving you a great workout. It may feel really difficult at first, but following the hiking trails of Baden will make the trip to the spa feel even more deserved.

If you want to get a feel of Bratislava in Slovakia, a tour is a great way to orient yourself to city. Rather than rushing into the town and potentially getting lost, find a tour that will help you find your way if you take the time to listen.
Your tour guide will teach you about history, culture, and some surprising stories. You may even get a chance to sit down and talk to them, like I did, and discuss our similarities and differences.
Our conversation gave me some incredible insight into how other countries view the US. I even learned that there are many things that unite us, such as our love of playing games!

During our time in Vienna, many members of our group spent some evenings at the 33rd Film Festival at Vienna’s Rathausplatz.
And what an amazing example this event was for Synergy.
Synergizing isn't just teamwork. It is much more than that. Synergy is coming together to create something new, something bigger than yourself or your team. This multi-day event showcases recorded musical performances that everyone can enjoy. There are food vendors of all kinds for everyone to find something they like.
To make an event like this successful, you need respectful and courteous attendees, committed servers and cleaners, dedicated event planners, and many others.

You gotta take care of yourself!
The 7 Habits defines four areas that we must tend to in order to find balance between work and play: Body, Heart, Mind, and Spirit. While you could go most anywhere to relax or have fun in Vienna, the Danube river gives an amazing opportunity to find balance in all four.
Delicious and healthy food options, walking trails, fantastic spots to sit with your family and friends, and areas to take time for yourself, maybe read a book.
I for one loved renting a small boat to enjoy the sunset while cruising slowly down the river with friends.
