At first, I thought Usrah was just like any other religious class that we regularly attend. However, over time, I realized that every Usrah session brought great benefits to my spirituality.

I really appreciated how our Naqibah, sister Atiqah always invited us to recite Surah Al-Kahfi before starting our activities. I also admired the way our Naqibah delivered knowledge to us—it was easy to understand, gentle, and engaging. Although we often learned basic topics like iman, ihsan, islam and adab, I believe they are essential reminders that we need consistently. Through Usrah, I had the opportunity to meet many new friends from different courses, which indirectly helped me expand my network.

Additionally, Usrah exposed me to various current issues, allowing us to exchange ideas and thoughts. Most importantly, it helped strengthen my connection with Allah and constantly reminded me of my faith.

For the next semester’s Usrah sessions, I hope to gain even more deeper knowledge and participate in more engaging activities, especially those conducted outside the classroom. Overall, Usrah has truly helped me become a better person than I was before.

The virtues found in Zakāh/Ṣadaqah

💠 1. Purification of Wealth and the Heart

Zakāh and Ṣadaqah are not just about giving money—they purify both your wealth and your soul. By giving a portion of what you earn, you cleanse yourself from greed, materialism, and attachment to worldly things. It reminds you that everything you have is a trust from Allah, and you're only a caretaker of it.

Qur’an: “Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.” — Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103

💠 2. Brings Blessings and Does Not Decrease Wealth

Many people fear that giving charity will reduce their wealth, but in reality, it brings more barakah (blessings). Allah promises that whatever is spent in His cause will be returned in a better form, whether in this world or the Hereafter. Even though the amount you give seems to decrease, your wealth becomes more meaningful and beneficial.

Hadith: “Charity does not decrease wealth.” — [Sahih Muslim]

💠 3. Encourages Empathy and Social Unity

When you give zakāh or sadaqah, you become more aware of the struggles others face, such as hunger, debt, or homelessness. This empathy softens the heart and promotes kindness. It also helps build a stronger and more united society, as the rich support the poor and no one is left behind.

💠 4. Continuous Rewards Even After Death (Sadaqah Jariyah)

One of the greatest virtues of sadaqah is that it can continue to benefit you even after your death, if done in the form of ongoing charity. Things like building a well, funding education, or supporting a mosque keep earning you reward for as long as people benefit from them.

Hadith: “When a person dies, his deeds end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.” — [Sahih Muslim]

The virtues found in Ḥajj/ ʿUmrah

🕋 1. A Journey of Total Submission to Allah

Hajj and ʿUmrah require Muslims to leave behind their daily life, wear simple clothing (ihram), and follow Allah’s commands step by step. This teaches complete submission, reminding us that we are all equal before Him—regardless of wealth, race, or status. It reflects the essence of Islam: to surrender to Allah alone.

🕋 2. Forgiveness of Sins and a New Beginning

One of the greatest virtues of Hajj is that it wipes away past sins. Performing Hajj sincerely for Allah’s sake grants the believer a chance to return home as pure as the day they were born. It’s a spiritual rebirth and a powerful motivation to live a better life.

Hadith: “Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or wrongdoing, he returns as if he were born anew.” — [Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim]

🕋 3. Promotes Unity and Brotherhood

Millions of Muslims from around the world gather during Hajj, wearing the same clothing, doing the same rituals, and worshipping the same Creator. This powerful experience breaks down social and racial barriers, uniting the Ummah in peace and purpose.

🕋 4. Teaches Patience, Sacrifice, and Gratitude

Hajj and ʿUmrah are physically and emotionally challenging. Pilgrims must endure heat, crowds, long walks, and strict rituals. These difficulties teach patience, increase gratitude for everyday comforts, and strengthen reliance on Allah during hardship.

Over the 7 weeks of Usrah, I’ve learned a lot about myself and my relationship with Allah. The sessions reminded me to be more consistent in my worship and to always reflect on my intentions. I also appreciated the supportive environment where we could share our thoughts openly and grow together. The reminders and discussions helped me understand the importance of good character and staying connected to Islamic values in daily life.

For improvement, I think Usrah could include more engaging activities like light outdoor sessions or team-building games to strengthen our bond. It would also be great if everyone had the chance to lead a short sharing session to boost confidence. Topics that relate more to student life, like stress management or balancing studies with faith, would make the sessions even more meaningful.
