The author describes the driving conditions and tack that was cruel to the horses. For example, Black Beauty says, "Beyond the turnpike was a long piece of road, upon which fresh stones had just been laid- large sharp stones, over which no horse could be driven quickly without risk of danger. Of course my shoeless foot suffered dreadfully; the hoof was broken and split down to the very quick, and the inside was terribly cut by the sharpness of the stones". With this use of imagery, the reader understands that the stones were very sharp and they cut into Black Beauty's hoof very deep. The irony in this quote is that Ginger was describing how badly she was broken in and then she says it was her first experience of men's kindness. The similes are used to describe a good owner and a bad owner. For example, Black Beauty says, "Those who have never had a bit in their mouths cannot think how bad it feels; a great piece of cold hard steel as think as a man's finger to be pushed into your mouth". This simile is what Black Beauty thought of the bit. He said it was as thick as a man's finger.
