The Great Depression ended with t a sharp reduction in spending and taxes. WW2 marked the end of the Depression because 12 million unemployed men were sent to the military and a similar number was sent to defense-related jobs. Those jobs took care of the 17 million unemployed in the US. When FDR was elected into office, he created numerous work relief programs to help the unemployment rate decrease. He signed the New Deal into law 100 day after being elected and it created 42 agencies that created jobs, allow ionization and provide the unemployed insurance. Many of these programs still exist. These programs help safeguard the economy to prevent another depression.

Food was in short supply for a variety of reasons: much of the processed and canned foods was reserved for shipping overseas, transportation of fresh foods was limited due to gasoline/tire shortages/importing restrictions, and transporting soldiers/supplies was a priority instead of of food. Because of these shortages, the US government’s Office of Price Administration established a system of rationing that would more fairly distribute foods that were in short supply. Every American was issued a series of ration books during the war that contained removable stamps good for certain rationed items which a person could not buy without also giving the grocer the right ration stamp.

Between 1940 and 1945, net cash income for farmers increased from $4.4 billion to $12.3 billion. The average farmer went from a net income of just over $700 to over $2,063 – yet farmers still earned only 57 percent of what their urban cousins made.

Truman's domestic policies as president took far less of his time, and proved far less successful, than his foreign policies. Here also he dealt with three major issues: administration of the modern American presidency, a legislative program known as the Fair Deal, and Republican accusations of internal subversion and corruption. He managed well with two of these domestic matters. The Truman Doctrine was an American foreign policy whose stated purpose was to counter Soviet geopolitical expansion during the Cold War. It was first announced to Congress by President Harry S. Truman on March 12, 1947 and further developed on July 12, 1948 when he pledged to contain threats to Greece and Turkey.
