The authors of the database ABC-Clio state, "Genocide is the systematic attempt to destroy a national, ethnic, or religious group." A genocide is when one religous or ethnic group targets and tries to destory another religous or ethnic group. A significant genocide called Bosnia Herzegovina took place. The database Britannica claims, "Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country situated in the western Balkan Peninsula of Europe. The larger region of Bosnia occupies the northern and central parts of the country, and Herzegovina occupies the south and southwest." The gonocide took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the western Balkan Penninsula of Europe. When did it occur, and how long did it last? The authors of the website Historyplace argue, "Bosnia-Herzegovina 1992-1995..." The Bosnia Herzegovina genocide took place from 1992-1995. It lasted for four years.

The authors of the website Historyplace claim, "...resulted in genocide committed by the Serbs against the Muslims in Bosnia." "The combat during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) was brutal between the area's three main cultural groups: Serbs, Croats, and Muslims. From the war's onset, the Bosnian Serb army started raiding and burning Bosnian Muslims' residences. The Muslim citizens were gathered, after which they were assaulted, slaughtered, or imprisoned. Up to twenty-six thousand Muslim residents had been methodically massacred by the time the war came to an end." In the Genocide Bosnia Herzegovina, the Serbs were trying to destory the Muslims. The Serbs ended up slaughtering, assulting, and imprisoning the Muslim. This war was a very brutal war.

There are many similarites and differences in the ethnic groups the Serbs and the Muslims.

According to The Bosnian War and Ethnic Cleansing book, "The six republics that made up Yugoslavia differed greatly from each other. Each became an independent country at great human cost. Serbia was the largest and most powerful of the former Yugoslav republics. Its dominance was a contest source of concern and resentment among the other republics." "In Bosnia, which is slightly smaller than the US state of West Virginia, 44 percent of the poulation was Muslim, 31 percent was Serb, and 17 percent was Croat." All of the ethnic groups differ from each other. They beleive different things. Each of them gained independence at a big cost. Muslims had the greatest population in Yugoslavia. Serbs had the second greatest population. The authors of the article that Mrs. Christoffel linked claims "Bosnia is one of several small countries that emerged from the break-up of Yugoslavia, a multicultural country created after World War I by the victorious Western Allies. Yugoslavia was composed of ethnic and religious groups that had been historical rivals, even bitter enemies, including the Serbs (Orthodox Christians), Croats (Catholics) and ethnic Albanians (Muslims)." When Yugoslavia broke apart, it was made up of ethnic and religous groups that didn't get along. They didn't agree with each other about their religious beliefs. The authors of The Bosnian War and Ethnic Cleansing book state, "Bosnian Serbs, Bosnian Croats, and Bosnian Muslims were friends and neighbors. They even intermarried. In contrast, the different ethnic groups in neighboring Croatia lived in separate parts of the republic. Religion tended to not divide Bosnians. The republic's Muslims, in particular, were not especially strict in their religious views. The government of Bosnia was headed by a seven-member presidency that included Croats, Serbs, and Muslims. This ensured that all groups were represented in the government. Despite these safegaurds, a series of global and national events plunged these Bosnian groups into a brutal war with one another." As said in the quote, religion was not the biggest and only reason they didn't get along.

The writers of ABC-Clio argue, "After Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence in March 1992, it was torn apart by civil war that pitted the country's ethnic groups against each other and ultimately killed some 100,000 people, roughly 66,000 of them Bosnian Muslims. Bosnian Serb forces waged a campaign of forced deportation, murder, torture, and rape, to drive Bosnian Muslims and Croats from eastern Bosnia, a process known as ethnic cleansing." After Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence, the two ethnic groups turned against each other. About 100,000 people died, and about 66,000 of them were the Muslims. The book The Bosnian War and Ethnic Cleansing emphasizes, "Three main ethnic groups live there: Muslims, Serbs, and Croats. As a result, there are at least three different ways of viewing the Bosnian War. A bold war hero to one group might be a repressive dictator to another. A single territory may be claimed by many different groups. Self-defense can appear to others as aggression, and vice versa." The three main ethnic groups all had different beliefs and viewpoints, which means there are at least three different viewpionts on the war. The website states, "The extreme brutality of this war can be attributed in large part to historic animosities and cultural divisions between contending groups." The reasons the war was so cruel was because of the anger between the groups, and the different cultures.

The United States also held a meeting in Dayton Ohio to try and make peace between the regions. The peace talks eneded with Bosnia being divided between a Croat-Bosniak federation and a Serb republic. The United Nations also brought a lot of people to trial for war crimes.
