Most of the people are African American, and about 45% live below the poverty line. Flint has a river running through it that is the dumping grounds for many factories. Because this water was so disguesting, drinking water for the town had been pumped from Detroit. Because the town was short on money they made the decision to stop pumping water from Detroit and use the flint river water. Residents started complaining that the water was dirty, smelly and gross. Many members of the Sioux tribe were concerned that the pipeline would contaminate their main water source, the Missouri  River. They were also worried that it would go onto sacred places. The Sioux tribe says that the pipeline violates treaties because of how close it is to the reservation and the fact that they were not consulted when this decision was made and there wasn't the required impact study done on the pipeline. This is another example of environmental racism because of hpow the Native Americans were treated. It was just below a category 5. It is often compared to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. These were both category 4 storms that hit Texas and Florida. The response to Hurricane Maria was unbelievable, and not in a good way. Federal response in Puerto Rico took 3 times as long as in Texas and 30 times as long as in Florida. This is partially the cause of many many deaths. Hurricanes Irma and Harvey were each linked to fewer than 150 deaths. Hurricane Maria is related to over 3,000. Puerto Rico is not a US state, it is a territory.
