There are many things that can cause social media addiction. Fear of missing out(FOMO) is one of the ways people get addicted to social media. When other people are using social media you sometimes feel the need to get on and use it too. Also, you could get FOMO if something is going on and you wanna know about it so you get on social media to find out. A similar thing is nomophobia. Nomophobia is a fear of being without your phone. A lot of people with social media addiction also have nomophobia because they don't want to be far away from social media. People with mental health issues are more likely to become addicted to social media. So a lot of people get addicted to social media to improve their mental health but end up just making it worse.
(Social Media Victims Law Center)

How does social media addiction affect a person emotionally, physically, and socially?

If you have a social media addiction you spend a lot of time on your phone leading to being less active. Social media addiction has a negative impact on your physical well-being because you would rarely be doing something active if you're always on social media. Social media addiction can give you mental health, affecting you emotionally. Anxiety and depression often occur in people with a social media addiction. This is because people who are addicted to social media rarely have healthy social interactions. People with social media addictions also have poor school or work performance. You know you have social media addiction when your school or work results are getting worse. Spending too much time on social media can negatively affect your marks and performance at work. Another effect of social media addiction is social isolation. Spending less time in person and more time online can cause people to feel isolated.
(Zayed, 2023)

Also if you talk to them about their mental health they would feel a lot better after.

Try to get them to limit themselves on their social media time.

The goal of the program is to help people with their social media addiction by doing the "underlying psychodynamic work so that they can build a stronger and more empowered sense of their own identity—without the counterfeit social connection of “social” media."(Omega Recovery)
At Omega Recovery there are many different programs for people with social media addiction. These programs include many different therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and narrative therapy. There are also things like nature immersion, outdoor behavioral activities, and yoga activities. They also do one on one counseling. They decide what you need based on your background and mental health needs.
