In the novel, "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, a major theme is Loyalty. The Greasers show that they are trustworthy and loyal by helping each other out in tough situations like family, "We're almost as close as brothers; when you grow up in a tight-knit neighborhood like ours you get to know each other real well." (Hinton 3). This quote shows that when you have a close neighborhood you are able to develop a relationship with everyone that is almost as close as family. It also illustrates in how all of the Greasers near Pony's neighborhood are trustworthy and loyal to be family

In The Outsiders , by S.E. Hinton, choice is a major theme. In the novel choice tends to determine the fate of characters. Whether it's choosing to run away, or saving kids from a burning fire, choice brings about fate. For example, when "' a piece of timber caught [Johnny] across the back - he might have a broken back, and he was burned pretty severely'" (Hinton 95). The choice Ponyboy and Johnny made later cost Johnny his life. He did it because he thought their lives were worth more than his. He thought they had more to live for, and that they had a life to live. Even though Johnny was only fourteen The choice he made determined his fate. All in all, choice determines the fate of characters.

In this part of the story pony tells us that the gang is loyal and like family, ¨With out us Johnny would not know what love is¨ (Hinton ). This shows loyalty because with out the gang Johnny would probably be as sour and stubborn as Dally, or be as ruthless and his parents. With out the gang being loyal to him or him being loyal to the gang he would be hurt mentally and physically.

One of the major themes in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is that stereotyping is not good and no one should judge anyone before knowing them. While at the park Pony and Bob are arguing when Bob says "You know what a greaser is?...White trash with long hair" (Hinton 55). When Bob says this he is stereotyping because he doesn't really know Pony and all the other greasers. Bob only says this as an assumption about all greasers because they are not all bad. The Socs and many other people assume that all greasers are bad hoodlums.

Throughout the novel, many people have to make choices, some good, and some bad. As making a choice, there is always a cause and effect from it. When Johnny and Pony see the church burning, they have two choices. One, not to go save the kids, or to go in the burning church to save them. "I'll get them don't worry! I started a dead run for the church." (Hinton 91). When Pony and Johnny arrive to see the church burning, they have two choices,. They know if they go in to help the kids, they can get very hurt, and that they are risking their lives. They know that if they don't go and help the kids, the kids would be stuck in there and burn to death, which they didn't want to let happen. They chose to go into the burning church to help the children out, even though it could take their lives.

Ponyboy narrates throughout the novel about how one of the rules of being a Greaser is "Our one rule, besides Stick together, is don't get caught" (Hinton 29) . The Greasers put much emphasis on sticking together as a group, such as when Johnny was in the hospital and the Greasers visited him every day if they could. The Greasers stay together, even if it would be much easier to turn one of them into the "fuzz," or to abandon another Greaser in an unfair and outnumbered fight. To a Greaser, loyalty is one of the most important values.

Ponyboy explains the gang's major rules and says, "Our one rule besides sticking together, is don't get caught" (Hinton 29). Ponyboy explains that no matter what they will always stick together and rarely go out alone because they could get jumped. this shows that they are very loyal to each other. Another thing Ponyboy mentioned was not getting caught, they will make sure that whatever they do that is against the law (because they are greasers) they will stay together and not get caught. Overall the theme, "Loyalty" is a major lesson taught throughout the novel.

In the novel "The Outsiders," one of the major themes is stereotyping. When Steve is talking about how greasers are viewed in society, he says, "'Greaser...greaser...greaser' [he] singsonged. 'O victim of environment, underprivileged, rotten, no-count hood!'" (Hinton 136). In society, greasers are viewed as people who don't have much money and who put too much grease in their hair, but many greasers are not like that and want a change in the view that they are held to just because of the way they look.

In “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton stereotyping is a theme in the book. The lesson in the book is to not judge someone based on what they look like and what choices they make. The Greasers in “The Outsiders’’ are stereotyped of being robbers, dirty, and are lower class. The Socs however are classified as being trouble makers, upper class and have no emotions. When describing the Greasers and Socs Ponyboy says, “ Noy like the Socs who (...) get editorial in the paper for being a public discrace one day and an asset to soceity the next. Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars …”(Hinton 3). Pony boy is stereotyping Socs and Greasers. Though, twords the end of the book we see how these stereotypes don't fit all Socs or all Greasers.

A huge theme in "The Outsiders" is that you can't judge a book by its cover. When Ponyboy meets Cherry Valance she tells him, "'I'll bet you think the Socs have it made. The rich kids, the West-side Socs'" (Hinton 34). Cherry knew what Pony was thinking. He stereotyped the Socs and thought they were no good rich kids and had no problems, but just by knowing and seeing they're rich doesn't mean they don't have problems.
