Alcohol is a legal beverage in the US. In the early 1920s, it was banned in the US during a period known as prohibition. Though the chemical is not only used as an ingestible, other forms of the same type of ethanol are also used as factors for combustion as well as sedatives and for antiseptic purposes. Today, while alcohol production is legal, it is illegal to sell to anyone under the age of 21, and it is also illegal to drink and drive at the same time. Though countries such as the DPRK have enacted extremely high excise taxes on alcohol, such taxes are rare in the rest of the world due to its ubiquity. Uses such as culinary have been documented as early as 300 BC by the greeks. Though alcohol today is considered a regulated substance, use in religious settings and in private settings by minors are considered socially acceptable.
http://www.drugfreeworld.org/drugfacts/alcohol/understanding-affects-on-body.html

Relevance To Teenagers

According to the NIH, 30% of teens have admited to drinking in the past without the knowledge of their parents. Much of this drinking occurs in a party setting, where social pressure from their peers force them to partake in the alcohol. This issue is important to our age group because of alcohol's potential effects on our health. Drunk driving kills 4,000 teens every year. Apart from these directly alcohol related deaths, early alcohol drinking is found to be related to higher risks of liver disease, alcohol abuse, and pathological conditions. Alcohol consumption among the young is also linked with high dropout rates and lower overall income. Because teenagers are young, alcohol companies tend to target them with flashy ads showing alcohol as a component in being socially acceptable. Drinking alcohol puts you at higher risk for being robbed, raped, or assaulted. Under the influence of alcohol, your judgment is impaired. You are more likely to place yourself in a risky situation that you would normally avoid.
http://teens.webmd.com/teens-and-alcohol?page=2#2

The first recorded use of alcohol was in 2700 BC in Ancient Babylon. Major cultures around the world developed gods for alcohol. The first recorded alcoholic beverage was beer. Made from the wheat plant of the babylonians, it was used as a form of currency for hundreds of years. Greco-Roman plays and literature is full of warnings against the effects of alcohol, warning against the effects of excessive drinking. Today, the alcohol industry has evolved into an over 219 billion dollar industry, every country having either some form of domestic alcohol producing company. From the fields of babylon, this process of fermentation has truly become a ubiquitous human endeavour.
https://www.statista.com/topics/1709/alcoholic-beverages/
