What is celebrated on August 10, 1809?

On August 10, 1809, the First Cry of Independence is remembered.

On August 10, 1809, part of the Quito Creole society expressed its determination to form an independent mandate from the Spanish Crown. A series of previous events happened among them is the revolution of the Alcabalas, that of the tobacconists, the uprising of the natives against the Crown, these events had already sown the hopeful idea of the liberation of the colonies.
The invasion of Napoleon, which led to the resignation of King Carlos IV to the protection of his son Ferdinand VII, and the endorsement of the latter of the seat to Napoleon I put Spain in disarray in 1808. For this fact they were formed throughout the Spanish rule boards of popular governments to protect their king and people. In America, which was under Spanish command, they also settled. The United States had already achieved its independence and in Creole circles there was talk of the French Revolution. Among the intellectuals and other groups of Quito Creole elites, some meetings had already been held to discuss the social and economic circumstances of the towns, the events in Spain and France, among other topics. However, they denounced them and ended up in prison.

This date is considered as the beginning of the independence of what is now Ecuador, when the Creoles rebelled against President Ruiz de Castilla, declaring the government of the Audiencia unsubstantiated. The neighborhood deputies who were part of this event signed an act in which they confirmed the rebellion and organized the administration in a different way.

This document hints at an invitation to other cities to voluntarily ally themselves with the Interim Government that represents Fernando VII, while he regains his freedom. August 10, 1809 was a revolutionary movement, Quito sowed the seed and America followed suit.

August 10, 1809, is a date remembered by Ecuadorians when commemorating the First Cry of Independence, this marked the history of the freedom of America, paying a well-deserved tribute to the courage of those who founded that nation.

First Autonomous Government Board of Quito:

It was an executive government that was created in the territory of the Quito presidency due to the Napoleonic investment in Spain, and it gave rise to a revolutionary beginning that lasted until 1812.

It took place in the city of Quito on August 10, 1809, after the fall of Manuel Urries, then president of the Royal Audience of Quito, this event is known in Ecuador and in other regions as Primer Grito de Hispano-American Independence this is because it constituted the beginning of the process of emancipation of Latin America, it is also worth emphasizing that those who participated in it are known as the patriots of August 10, 1809, being participants of the same 32 were imprisoned and murdered on the orders of Ruiz de Castilla in the Mutiny of August 2, 1810.

As in every day, there were firm steps and also setbacks, triumphs and defeats, but the will of the heroes exceeded their own existence and inspired the relief of those who followed them and shared the vision of the final goal: independence.

August 10, 1809, the date of the First Cry of Independence, is the National Day of Ecuador. It is our National Day of the Fatherland with which the nation set an example of freedom to the world. Here is a historical review of the historian Juan J. Paz y Miño Cepeda.
During the night of August 9, 1809, a nucleus of conspiratorial intellectuals, doctors, marquises and creoles residing in the city of Quito, together with representatives of the neighborhoods, gathered at the house of Manuela Cañizares. There they decided to organize a Supreme Government Board, in which Juan Pío Montúfar, Marqués de Selva Alegre would act as President, Bishop José Cuero y Caicedo as Vice President and as Secretaries of State, in the Offices of the Interior, Grace and Justice and of Hacienda, the notable Juan de Dios Morales, Manuel Quiroga and Juan Larrea, respectively. The following morning, on August 10, Antonio Ante was in charge of presenting, before the President of the Royal Court, Manuel Urriez, Count Ruiz de Castilla, the office by which he was made known that he had ceased in his functions and that the government was assumed by the Sovereign Board of Quito. At the same time, Juan de Salinas took charge of the garrison, which immediately came out in favor of the Junta.

This August 10, 2021 marks the 212th anniversary of the beginning of the process of Independence of Ecuador. On a day like that, in 1809, the President of the Royal Audience of Quito, Manuel Urriés, count Ruiz de Castilla, was dismissed and a Sovereign Board or Supreme Government Board was installed, made up of Creoles from Quito, a name that according to the system of castes of New Spain were given to the Spanish settled in America.Several factors caused that the Creoles undertook that autonomic movement. For example, some historians pick up, the Creoles were tired of not having the same power as the European -or peninsular- whites and of the “chapetones” –also European whites of great economic power in Peru, which at that time responded to the Viceroyalty from Lima.

For some it was a conspiracy, for others a popular uprising, the truth is that Quito intellectuals and families formed a Sovereign Board that allowed the beginning of an independence plan. The crisis that the Spanish Crown was experiencing, caused by Napoleon's invasion of Spain, mobilized the Quito classes to confront the monarchy and achieve the desired independence for the country.

The fall of the deposed Spanish King Fernando VII, gave rise to a collective reaction of the Quito aristocracy and the so-called Quito Creoles. Antonio Ante, hero of the revolt, went to the Government House to inform the president of the Quito Court, Manuel Urriez (Count Ruiz de Castilla), that the Sovereign Board had removed him from office.

The news that a Sovereign Board was established in Quito that relieved the royal authority of positions was taken by the viceroyalties of Bogotá and Lima as an insurrectionary event, this due to the precarious communication of the time and the agitated international context. For this reason they sent troops to Quito, almost incognito, with the purpose of ending the insurrection against the Crown. in the Libertarian Act of August 10, 1809, an act in which the names and surnames of those common Creoles who will later shed their blood are inscribed. On that August 10, the libertarian junta had signed an act where Ecuador ceased to belong to the Spanish crown.

When we think of August 10, 1809, what we learned in school comes to mind, a date full of symbolism and that was considered the First Cry of Independence of America. The passage of time and the new contributions of historiography on independence have put the date in the right place, overcoming myths and heroic narratives full of anachronism. The revolution of the Marquis or the Juntista revolution has several edges and also diverse antecedents.
The Independence Monument, also known as the Monument to the Heroes of August 10, 1809, is a commemorative column located in the city of Quito D.M. which is located in the center of the Plaza Grande, being its most important element and the one that gives its name to the Plaza. It is raised to the memory of the Quito patriots who started the struggles for independence in Ecuador. It was inaugurated in 1906 to commemorate the so-called First Spanish-American independence cry by the then president, General Eloy Alfaro Delgado. It is one of the most important icons of the Historic Center of the city and the country; as well as an important site of political concentration for being in front of the Carondelet Palace, seat of the Ecuadorian government.
