Influencer#1 Gorillaz-Band

Gorillaz was one of the first major music bands I listened to when growing up, so they became my gateway into the world of music. The style of genre and technology, that they used to display their music was one of the key reasons, my interest in the band peaked. Gorillaz was one of the first musicians to try an all-virtual band, primarily using animation to create unique characters of themselves. I was influenced by the way Gorillaz, made themselves stand out from other typical music bands at the time. Later pushing me to incorporate new stylistic and bold ideas, into any of my creative works whether it be editing, filming or creating music. To not only make it something unique to me but an idea that's new and fresh for viewers. The way Gorillaz, used technology to create colourful and vibrant animation, at the time was impressive. It later influenced me to add the concepts of animation and incorporate new styles of technology whether it was for editing or filming content for music. I was heavily influenced by how different their music videos were compared to other major artists at the time, which led me to always think about how I can make my videos strange, bold and interesting so they don't follow the trends of other artists and fall into the background. After I would always include more vibrate colors in the background to make the video pop and stand out. It always influenced the way I wanted to create music, I started to mix several different genres into one such as rap, pop and techno. The band gave me the idea that music doesn't need to be one set thing you can mix several different types of music to create a hybrid of them. You don't always need to be the focus of your music you can direct your ideas into characters or animations which I believed was a fascinating way of displaying your music. The animated characters can fuse the real artist's personalities into themselves which is an idea that you can change and evolve with technology.

Influencer#2 Singer-Robbie Williams

Similar to Gorillaz, Robbie Williams influenced me with the social themes in his music videos, the way he created a character for each music video that was fun and full of energy really influenced me to do the same with my content. In each video, I would always think of a new type of character that I could embody to grab the viewer's eyes by standing out more. Robbie Williams taught me how to be unique and creative with how you portray yourself from your dress style to the personality you throw into your content. Always be unique and fun that way people will wanna jump into the music more, but also allow you as an artist to stand out from the rest. That influenced me later in the way I dressed on a daily bases but also to not always just be myself but be strange and weird in the way I present myself through my content so that I can be my own unique type of artist. In a way that also allowed me to Hoan in on a specific type of audience that could get on board with my persona and the different characters I would take on. Robbie Williams also influenced my production methods, the way he styled and shot his music videos was bold and fun, and it made him stand out. The way the production was set up allowed his loud character on set to be boosted by his surroundings from the background to the backup dancers. If Robbie was in a loud and fun outfit so were the background characters creating a unique world that suited his character on stage. That influenced me to not only be bold in the ideas and content I create as an artist but make a world in my videos that support the persona of the artist. If you want to be a 70s disco singer then set it in a disco club, in disco gear on rollerblades with your background characters dressed the same. It taught me how to create consistency but also build a world in the music video. The artist influenced me to create a story in the music video and have a world where the story could thrive, so you're not just listening to music but following a loud fun character on a short journey which would in turn grab more audience attention.

Influencer#3- Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer was the main reason I fell in love with the genre of movie soundtracks and scores for the genre of film. Hans Zimmers's scores for Inception influenced me to create my music with more classical instruments but also create more power to my own music by adding in more brass and softer instruments such as pianos to balance out the two. It made me wanna build my music up with a softer start through piano and build with brass instruments in the background, Hans Zimmer influenced the way I could tell a story through the music I produce. However, I think the main influence I took from Hans Zimmer is the way you can incorporate music into the background of footage and add so much more. I found through listening to his soundtracks how music can extend the tension of a scene, give life to it and finally commentate on it. The way Zimmer is able to empower the scene through his music was a huge inspiration to how I can use my own music to enhance a scene in a short film I produce or even in something smaller such as a youtube or music video. If you want a scene to have more love and affection then you use a piano to create a soft and gentle tone in the background to enhance those emotions in the scene. If you want more fear and power in a chase scene you would use an organ or include more bass through congas drums. This taught me how I can influence a scene the way I want through the musical instruments I incorporate. It allowed me to understand how music can be used as a tool in cinema to help tell a story all on its own, invoking emotions in the audience through soundtracks.

Gorillaz took from several different genres of music to form their songs, one of the most commonly used ones was rap. Gorillaz took a lot of inspiration from De La Soul, who is an American hip-hop trio that formed back in 1987. They were big collaborators with Gorillaz for nearly two decades, they inspired and helped Gorillaz incorporate rap into their more techno-based music. De La Soul toured with Gorillaz and provided rap lyrics for the songs and also helped to perform them live with the band. They collaborated the two genres on several major Gorillaz tracks such as Feel Good inc which would later win a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration. This shows how helpful but also influential De La Soul was for the band incorporating new vocals and different styles of genres into their songs. One of the major reasons Gorillaz stood out as a band was due to the way they infused different genres into one which created their unique hybrid style. De La Soul played a big part in inspiring those ideas in the band. An emphasis on Gorillaz's unique music style in the industry, compared to other major artists at the time is highlighted by the band Del la Soul, who suggested Jay-Z could do with being as spontaneous as Gorillaz (Iqbal, 2010).

Another big influence on the band's inclusion of trip-hop was Massive Attack which was a British trip-hop trio that formed in 1988. Trip-hop was essentially a mixture of hip-hop, and electronica with slow tempos and the inclusion of atmospheric sounds, it would tend to incorporate aspects of jazz and blues as well, genres in which Gorillaz used frequently. Damon Albarn was the main creative influence behind Gorillaz and the genres of music they would later incorporate into their songs. Albarn took a lot of inspiration from Massive Attack and primarily their use of experimentation of blending several genres into one. This really inspired Albarn and Gorillaz to start incorporating hip-hop, techno and other genres of music outside the alt-rock sound they primarily used. Massive Attack would also inspire the use of Sprechgesang, which is a mixture of spoken word and singing, an example of this being used is in their song Demon Days. The use of Sprechgesang would become one of Gorillaz defining traits in their unique music style. Even some of the popular animated band characters in Gorillaz took inspiration from Massive Attack such as 2-D who is the lead vocalist in Gorillaz and was based on 3-D who was also one of the lead vocalists for Massive Attack. When designing 2-D’s character, Albarn based a lot of the features of the character on 3-D himself, such as the gesture the character uses in Feel Good Inc’s music video which resembles 3-D’s gestures in Massive Attacks music video for Risingson. Another example of Gorillaz's mixed style can be seen in their song Clint Eastwood, with a hybrid assortment of different sounds and instruments layered over each other. Albarn supports this by stating in reference to the song Clint Eastwood, ”I mean you don’t get more perfect than that, really. It’s just complete hybrid” (Albarn in Gerber, October 2020). Alban directly references instruments in his quote during an interview with Vulture that the sound “came from switching on the Suzuki Omnichord and the first preset was the beat.”

Gorillaz also took a lot of inspiration when it came to designing the characters of the band and the world around them. The wacky animation style they used was based on the classic cartoon Looney Tunes, in the way the characters behave is also inspired by the actions and personalities of the characters in Looney Tunes such as Tasmanian Devil and Daffy Duck. When designing the look of the band such as the hairstyles, outfits and overall look, Gorillaz took inspiration from outfits that most heavy metal bands would use such as eyeliner and primarily black or darker clothing. For the hairstyles of the band members, Gorillaz took inspiration from old horror films and cyberpunk, an example of this would be 2-D’s spikey colourful hair.

One of the biggest influences throughout Robbie Williams's career was Elton John. In Williams's early career, he was struggling to find the style of artist he wanted to be. After watching several live performances by Elton himself, Williams decided to adopt a similar stage persona. Williams took a lot of inspiration from how Elton performed on stage down to the outfits he wore. Similar to Elton, Williams would wear bright colours such as red, yellow or blue to make him stand out from other artists but also to reflect his loud personality on stage. Williams would adopt a similar style of movement to Elton moving around on stage frequently with a lot of energy in each movement. Furthermore, Williams would spike his hair and style it differently at each show similar to how stars like Elton and Madonna would have different outfits or looks for each stage performance. Williams's charisma, loud attitude and free spirit were all inspired by stars like Elton John and Madonna.

An artist that Williams looked up to a lot, especially during his early career was George Michael, Williams's first solo single that he released was a cover of George Michael’s Freedom 90. Williams would also later go on to pay tribute to Michael in several shows in his early touring days. Williams would also take a lot of inspiration from Michael's music videos and the way he would perform in them. Williams is known to play crazy characters in his music videos due to his fascination with the supernatural. This can be seen in his most popular music videos such as his single Rock DJ where he rips his skin off at the end of the music video and dances as a skeleton. The wild playboy persona that makes Willaims stand out as an artist is derived from Michaels himself. Michaels would tend to be the playboy with attractive women in the music videos, as he dressed in fancy clothes with stylish hairstyles, which Williams took inspiration from himself. However, Michaels also had slower and more grounded songs that spoke to his personal life as an artist through his more popular singles such as Careless Whisper and I Can’t Make You Love Me. Williams took inspiration from this when writing his more melancholy songs such as She’s The One and most famously Angles which is based a lot on Willaims real life. Williams breaks down his clear admiration but also fear for the artist he took so much inspiration from when talking to Smooth Radio, "I was equal parts inspired and terrified, not of George, but of the prospect of trying to be something like George" (Smooth Radio, 2018).

Despite being a member of boy bands in his early career such as Take That, he had a greater interest in rock music. The interest originated from the famous northern British rock band Oasis, Williams's early music was all influenced by Oasis, and so the majority of his songs at the time fell into that genre. Williams also loved the party lifestyle of rock artists such as Oasis and the dress attire the band was known for. All these aspects would later play into the artist that William's would later go on to be. The rock genre inspired William's but didn't bring him much success until his famous single Let Me Entertain You, which was inspired by his early love for the rock genre and Oasis themselves. Oasis had a big impact on William's early life as an artist and the themes of the band would later stick with him, in his later career being one of the reasons he stood out from the rest.

One of the key influences of Hans Zimmer was Ennio Morricone, in Zimmer's early life he was always fascinated with music and learning more about how he could create music, but made it clear he wasn't originally interested in scoring movie soundtracks until he heard Morricone’s music. Zimmer always had great respect for Morricone as a composer as one of the first films Zimmer ever saw was Once Upon A Time In The West, which was scored by Morricone, as he was well known for scoring spaghetti westerns such as The Good The Bad And The Ugly. Zimmer highlighted his fascination with Morricone scores in his early career when he stated “It wasn't just the music he wrote for Spaghetti Westerns, think about The Mission, think about Once Upon A Time In America, what beautiful music that truly was.” (Zimmer, 2020). One of the key reasons Zimmer is one of the best and most popular movie composers of his time is that he not only creates beautiful music but enhances each scene his music is used in. Zimmer is well known for not only enhancing a director's work through his music but telling his own story alongside the scene. Making a scene tenser or longer through subtle changes in instruments and tone throughout the piece. Zimmer took inspiration from the way Morricone bled his emotions into the piece and told a story through it, in the background of the movie. Zimmer was inspired by the beauty of Morricone's work later stating “Ennio taught me that the simplest, purest and honest melody is the hardest to write. That it’s not supposed to be easy, that it’s a profound mission we are on that we must take seriously and humbly when we write music” (Zimmer, 2020).

Ennio Morricone wasn't Zimmer's only influence the man that worked alongside Morricone and directed the films he scored, Sergio Leone. He was a popular Italian film director at the time and was known for directing several popular spaghetti westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars and My Name Is Nobody. Leone's films were everything to Zimmer when he was growing up and a key influence as to why he went on to score films specifically. As stated before Zimmer didn't always express an interest in films until he saw Leone's spaghetti westerns, they were some of the first films Zimmer watched when he was younger. The key relationship between Morricone and Leone inspired the way Zimmer would interact and work alongside a director, it influenced him to create music that not only he liked but music that would enhance and add to the story that the director was trying to tell. Zimmer breaks down how important not only Morricone was to his early development but Leone as well, “I never decided to become a film composer. Ennio and Sergio Leone did that for me, letting me experience their magic.” (Zimmer, 2020).
