The vigilante groups got what they wanted, and even though Republican nominee Ulysses Grant won, not a single Republican vote was counted in Opelousas or in the surrounding towns. The Opelousas massacre also set the stage for future acts of violence and intimidation. Historian Michael Pfeifer states that “Lynching became routinized in Louisiana, a systematic way by which whites sought to assert white supremacy in response to African-American resistance,” It became a new normal in a time where the country was supposed to be healing. These events are little-remembered today, even if they were in the slightest way, people are more familiar with the Colfax massacre, which was influenced by the pattern set by the events of Opelousas. This reign of terror would continue on for years.
