Unit 2 - Lake District as a Natural Tourism Resources

Tourism destinations can be considered in terms of their resources, which are: natural; man-made not for tourists; man-made for tourists; and special events (Boniface and Cooper, 2012). The Lake District in England, as a National Park, is a destination of natural resources. Natural resources are at risk due to the questions of public use and debates over who is responsible for who the upkeep of 'unowned' spaces, due to potential 'tragic levels of overuse and sometimes destruction' (Ostrom, 2008, pp.1). This is a phenomenon known as the 'tragedy of the commons' (Hardin, 1974). For example, the Lake District 'suffers excessive visitor pressure and serious erosion problems' (Davies, 2016, pp.172), due to the number of visitors hiking and using the trails. This can lead to degredation of the natural resource, which in turn can impact the experience for both visitors and locals, thereby affecting the viability of the destination as a tourism product. However, routes in England are protected by a number of stakeholders, including government bodies, NGOs, charities, and other organisations such as the National Trust (Davies, 2016). Therefore, if tourism planners work with the organisations trying to protect the natural resource, tourism can be developed in a more sustainable manner. Moreover, if tourists try to be considerate of the areas they visit, and adhere to the guidance provided by such organisations, then we can protect the resource for future generations.

References:

Boniface, B.G. and Cooper, C., 2012.
