I currently work as a customer service agent for Southwest Airlines at the Denver International Airport. I have been with this company for 22+ years. Through my union, I am currently the Employee Assistance Program Peer Coordinator. I help my co-workers with resources for all sorts of life issues: drugs/alcohol, suicide, addictions, stress, mental health, grief, financial assistance, etc. I have a passion to help people and I always have a drive to do what I truly believe in bigger and better.

I have seen my coworkers, leaders and all, go through stages of painful changes and burnout of the corporate world. I've also seen good leadership and horrible leadership. I have witnessed my coworkers go through enormous stress in the workplace on top of personal issues outside of work. While businesses "say" they care about their employees, little is done to SHOW that care and concern. I would love to build programs to bring health and wellness (especially mental health) into businesses and corporations that have a high turnover or burnout rate. Especially after Covid, the mental health of the everyday employees trying to make ends meet has taken its toll. I strive to remind people of the good and encourage healthy living. I have seen that just a gentle reminder can change someone's day. I am wanting to work with both leadership and employees on finding a healthy balance in their own life alongside what they bring to work. Finding that work/life harmony is essential to feeling fulfilled in your workday, comprehending that your purpose serves well and you have balance when you go home from work.

Research #1: Coaching leaders toward favorable trajectories of burnout and engagement

Coaching leaders toward favorable trajectories of burnout and engagement - PMC (nih.gov)

Employee Burnout is increasing every year in the United States. In fact, a study in 2022 by the Future Forum Pulse indicates that 32-43% of employees, including management, are burnt out. This report also showed that amongst these burnt-out employees, they are 22x more likely to report higher stress and anxiety levels. These higher stress levels correlate to lower physical well-being and work-life balance. Burnout among leaders trickles down to the employees.

By hiring a corporate or executive coach, it is shown that one-on-one conversations can improve the work-place well-being as well as help them feel more productive and satisfied in other areas of life. There is little research in longevity of coaching in the workplace, but this study reveals that intervention with leaders in a business affects burnout and increases their engagement levels. By offering executive coaching to leaders, with carefully articulated goals can help all the employees surrounding the leader. The GROW model is used to help the leader to work towards goals.

Another study showed that a coaching program ending in 2020, leaders felt more hope and resilience when faced with the COVID19 Pandemic. High levels of burnout are associated with depression, loss of dedication, low job performance and job dissatisfaction. This creates pure exhaustion for the employees. When the employees dip into burnout, a common coping mechanism is to detach from their co-workers. We have learned that social connections are vital to the 6 pillars of Lifestyle medicine and by bringing in a coach to help the employees battle their personal story, it is also important to note that an executive coach can also work as a team builder to bring the employees together. Individual based interventions with a coach like self-awareness, eating healthy, exercising, and relaxation can help get an employee to start to climb out of the burnout stage. After working with a coach, it was shown that there were increases in occupational motivation and decreases in stress levels.

Research #2: Hard Return on Employee Wellness Programs.

Companies consider health and wellness programs a perk, but how many look at the amount of money they are saving by providing such programs to their employees?

After studying 10 organizations, they found that 6 essential pillars of employee wellness programs worked. The 1st one is coined: Multi-level leadership. This means that employees from each part of the hierarchy need to participate. When leaders participate themselves and encourage employees to participate, it provokes a feeling that others want to. If the leaders don’t participate, the employees won’t think it’s worth their time, as well. The 2nd pillar is Alignment. Depending on the scope of the job, it is important that a wellness program be well-communicated and in line with the motivation, goals and culture of the company. If the employees feel forced to participate, it won’t be beneficial. 3rd: Scope, Relevance and Quality. It needs to pertain to not just diet and exercise, but stress reduction, quality relationships and individualized to each person. It needs to be fun, catered to each company, challenging and high-quality coaching. Pillar #4: Accessible. This means a combination of online challenges, in person, and encouraged to participate as a team consistently. Pillar #5: Partnerships. Partnering with gyms, non-profits, and their own departments to factor in cost-saving. Pillar #6: Communications. Of course, having an encouraging and open communication regarding a wellness program is important.

Having a highly rated employee wellness program is proven to reduce absenteeism, increase morale, lower the company’s health costs, and increase productivity.

The idea of coaching in the workplace emerged in the 1950s. Workplaces started investing in promoting health and wellness programs due to high volumes of cancer, heart disease and strokes. It became more popular in the 1980's and emerged as a career in the 1990's and 2000's. Some say that Thomas Leonard was a "founding father" of corporate coaching. He founded the association and training school for personal development and corporate coaching called Coachville in 1992. Today, many businesses incorporate health and wellness programs and work with coaches for their leaders and employees.

I am not 100% of where my coaching career is headed, but I do know that I want to use the pillars of Lifestyle Medicine to incorporate into my entrepreneurial coaching style. I want to help individuals realize their potential and harmonize that with overall health to end their day being fulfilled in all life has to offer. I whole heartedly believe in the power of manifestation as well as the 90/10 Principle. 10% of life is what happens to you and 90% of life is decided by how you react. If I can help people see this in their everyday life and make good use of getting in touch with who they are and where they want to go, my life purpose will be fulfilled everyday.
