1) Feedback should connect with our learning styles (referred to as "our way of knowing")
2) Offers 3 ways to create a "Feedback Culture"
 - Share developmental ideas with colleagues
 - Ask colleagues what type of feedback is most helpful and in what areas (giving them a sense of control)
 - Think about how you prefer to receive feedback and how can you expand those preferences
3) Suggests there are 4 ways of knowing
 a) Instrumental: concrete
 b) Socializing - internalize assessments
 c) Self-authoring - decide for themselves what they need to improve
d) Self-transforming - open to other points of view/beliefs

Concerns: aren't we more complicated than "4 ways"; the 4 ways are presented in a hierarchal way, isn't it more true that knowing/feedback is on a spectrum depending on other conditions such as trust and topic?

Ways of Knowing

The purpose of feedback is for the receiver to find and have growth. The following ways of knowing are utilized to provide support and incorporate further challenge into feedback.

Instrumental
Feedback focuses on "rights" and "wrongs" .. a challenge of this method of feedback is scaffolding abstract thinking.

Socializing
Appreciation of personal effort (progress and personal qualities). One challenge of this method is incorporating conflict resolution.

Self Authoring
Encourages feedback receiver to take on a larger role when it comes to developing goals/ design initiatives. Challenge: Encourage receiver to explore new ideas.

Self-Transforming
Collaboratively reflect (internal and systemic). "Tensions of transformation" may pose a challenge.

*****************

Ways of Knowing reminds us that methods of feedback is something we grow used to. Teachers (leaders) may be used to utilizing a specific method of feedback. Feedback receivers may also be used to a specific method of feedback, therefore this may determine the effectiveness of the feedback.
