Dr. Geneva Gay refers to Culturally Relevant/Culturally Responsive (CR) Pedagogy as a new lens to enhance your vision as you teach. What has this lens revealed to you about your teaching? What is the greatest "take away" from this training experience?

My big take away is that my class needs to function to sustain cultures. But I cannot be an expert on my students' cultures. I can't do the work of sustaining those cultures. And students ARE experts on their own cultural experiences, so I need to partner with them to do that work. I need to be student-centered.

Based on what I learned, here is summary what I need to do:

1- Help my students make new friends by initiating interactive introductory activities. Join them as they reveal themselves and I should share my own piece as well.

2- Divide them in groups and give them some time to make social and educational communication.

3- Group discussions and presentations, need to be well monitored the specific assignments of the members to ensure that everyone is involved, especially the reluctant and timid ones. Help my students to grow and help them develop their potential.

4- Planning for the classroom activities gives students opportunities to present their creative ideas.

Make it a solid routine to set up student-teacher interactions

I don't think this is a "one and done" type subject. People are dynamic, so this subject will always be changing and seen through different POVs.

For me, this has been a very interesting lens in which to look at all of my teaching and other work at the college. I really think having this new lens will be very powerful for increasing student engagement and persistence/completion. - Andy B.

The course made me realize that. More for me to culturally grow for my students.
