I was reading comments in the bulletin like – “many story worlds look to the future but looking to the past has incredible potential as well”, and “liking the idea of personalized learning” and “a dystopian” setting. I wondered if we could combine it all in a fun engaging story like setting for people to explore. A place where the world has to recover from nothing but take advantage of the knowledge that still lived within the survivors and share it with the rest of the world (which opens the door for personalized teaching and personalized learning in a way I suppose). I don’t know what all would be included in this learning site but I’m thinking anything from the basic needs in life like growing food, science, to literature, whatever we can think of or want to include.

If we go this route I think we’d have to determine a basis, for example we (as a society) still have electricity, or someone was able to get it going again. Without that we wouldn’t be able to use the power of the internet to solicit the building of the digital online database we are soliciting, at least that’s the direction I went below in the story pitch. I’m up for updating or changing whatever we want to, or going a totally different direction, let me know what you think! I posted this on the Padlet as well.

Here's a link to what I stored on my website for lack of a better place to put it. I wrote this off the top of my head and you might want to read it before continuing with the rest of what's here on the Padlet to give yourselves a basis for what follows?!

I really have not done a bunch of research but here’s a website that might give some insight if we go this way. https://www.backdoorsurvival.com/prepping-for-an-emp-and-solar-flares/

Might we place the following introduction on a blog with a link to a website?

What shells would we put here that we would want people to fill in.

If this is just a blog post pointing to a shell or fake web page would we want graphics representing the shells that would be on the webpage with a sentence description?

Health

Heat

Home

In the futureistic world there are no cell phones. What?! Can we ever imagine. Yes. Smart technology is everywhere: embedded in our kitchen countertops, our clothing, the back seats of airplanes, car dashboards. Anywhere we do, we are connected with SMART, electronic technology, and can connect anywhere.

A catastrophic electromagnetic pulse envelops the earth and destroys all electronic devices. ALL electricity is gone. ALL microchips and data storage is gone. Basically, civilization, is wiped out. Though there are many survivors, because there is no electronic data, we only exist because of our relationships with others..... and that is barely hanging on a thread due to underdeveloped communication skills as over the last several decades, SMART technologies have communicated for us.

Humans have to survive in a world where data has been wiped, where our existence is only through relationships and communication. We have to re-build society. Thankfully, there are many elders that know how to communicate, how to write, how to grow food, how to find heat sources, how to build. These memory processes are still engrained in their minds and they can teach others how to survive in a world without data and electronics. They know the classical stories of old, and can read and tell stories around campfires. They have the ability to write it down on paper and share it with others.

Hi Shawna,

This is amazing! Okay… lets run with it. I was reading the article about EMPs, and then just jotting down ideas for a plot/story on the Padlet.…… Then I started to read your blog post and I think had the same idea in mind: the worlds data is gone and we have to re-create our own existence.

I actually was thinking more future-setting (i.e. 2030) where everything, our existence, was stored in data and there were no paper copies of anything. And, in fact, we got so used to SIRI and Alexa diction etc. that we didn’t even know how to write/type. And then when that disappeared, we actually have to prove who we are. Otherwise, we are all gone because the data about our existence is gone. Maybe that can be embedded? How do we prove our identities if all the data disappears?

Maybe in creating our new data OER community we put time limits on how long we can access electronics/information so that we can encourage face-to-face communication and story telling?

I think this is awesome! How do we want to present/post it? I don’t think there is much work we need to do beyond what you have already described….. other than presenting it. I hope we are on the same page. My cell phone is below if you want to chat. Take care - Wendee
