The hashtag's purpose is to expose large clothing companies like H&M, Zara, Disney, etc., to expose their garment makers' working conditions and to overall help improve the lives of workers from third world countries, at least through their working conditions.

#whomademyclothes was first introduced to Twitter when the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh collapsed due to poor building structural integrity, causing 1138 people to die and 2500 to be injured. This is the fourth largest industrial disaster in history.

However, this really caught twitter's eye in 2017, its most successful year to date. Most tweets come from this year.

Does online activism actually work: a critical analysis

I believe that regardless of the odds, online activism, specifically hashtags, definitely creates an impact and works, if implemented in the right way.

Online activism is a new form of activism created in the 2010's that helps people support and actively participate much easier than before, and in a result, more people are willing to support issues in society because activism groups can be formed in a matter of days today.

Hashtags specifically help create change the most, as it is an easy way to use little, memorable words and create big meanings out of them, making them the best type of online activism because many people believe they can help. Hashtags helped expose Hollywood actors and producers to sexual assault allegations, and they have helped causes from remote locations like northern Canada, and bringing their issues onto the world stage. Without hashtags, problems around areas of the world could've never been found out, so in this case, I believe hashtags and online social justice creates a fume for change by bring people around the world to help in issues they may have not known existed. However I don't believe hashtag activism is a reflection of our shift to an online world, I believe it is an add-on towards our lives. It helps us connect with others more easily, and discuss issues at hand much better. If it was simply a conversion between a physical and digital world, we would be achieving much less, and all activism would occur on the internet. Hashtags are a tool because they help us become better in activism, and encourage us to take action through both a digital and physical sense, by gathering support to organize rallies in real life.

Hashtag activism is good in many ways. It allows awareness of social issues to spread faster, making unheard-of issues become worldwide concerns, but it also causes people to have a false sense of accomplishment by liking, re-tweeting, etc into thinking they helped more then they should have. Likes do not help causes if that's all they contribute to the cause. Actual action, like protests and petitions get stuff done, not hashtags. They help create awareness, but they don't help us fix the issue.
